Curricular Adventures

Sophomores Tackle Ethical Questions
Students in 10th grade are progressing through a series of Magic Monday workshops that examine their first trimester ethical question: "Does Might Make Right?" Their activities include participating in power dynamics exercises, viewing a documentary about Jane Elliott's 1968 "Brown Eyes, Blue Eyes" discrimination experiment, discussing cyber-bullying and learning about the Stanford Prison and Milgram social experiments of the 1960's. The exploration of trimester ethical questions is woven into coursework for multiple classes through Harkness discussions and other forms of reflection.

Sophomores explore the relationship between power and human nature.

Service Learning in the Field

Middle School Sustainability Group Digs Right In
Students in the Sustainability service learning group are working hard each week at the Robertson Ranch Habitat Conservation Area in Carlsbad. The Center for Natural Lands Management works to preserve protected, native species in the preserve, and students have been assisting with a multi-year research study by clearing areas of invasive grasses. The study is measuring the growth of native plants in these and other parts of the preserve to determine future strategies for protecting the biological integrity of the habitat.
