Summer Reading Spawns a Community of Conversations
On September 10th, Pacific Ridge's 500 students gathered in small groups with faculty and staff to discuss their summer reading selections. This year, in addition to grade-wide assigned texts, students chose among a number of faculty-recommended books. Selections covered many topics and a wide range of fiction and non-fiction. For the reading groups, students met with the faculty or staff member who had recommended their book. According to librarian Ellen Cothran, the open choice books and discussions were a success. "The challenge with grade-wide books is identifying a single book that reaches out to each member of our diverse, growing student body," she said. "This year, students' choosing from a list of 65 options allowed them to connect meaningfully with their teachers and other adults on campus through stories that matter to them as individuals."
Ms. Grossman's Pride and Prejudice reading group launches its discussion by comparing the text to a whimsical board game of the same name. |

Photographer John Rowe Shares Images and Mission with Middle School Students On September 9th and 10th, photographer John Rowe visited Pacific Ridge's Middle School to share his photographs of Africa with students in Middle School Service Learning. Mr. Rowe has spent a number of years photographing tribal cultures in Africa, and recently co-founded OMO CHILD, a foundation dedicated to saving children marked for infanticide by certain tribes in remote areas of southwest Ethiopia. Due to the dedicated work of OMO CHILD's co-founder, Lale Labuko, 37 children have been rescued, and progress has been made toward eliminating the practice. For more information about OMO CHILD and to view a sampling of Mr. Rowe's captivating images, click here.
