Annual Rube Goldberg Competition: Inventors Unite!
In early May, teams of 8th graders built and presented Rube Goldberg inventions to their Conceptual Physics classes. The complex machines, named after the famous cartoonist, take several convoluted steps to perform a simple task. Before putting their machine into action, students explained the physics of each energy transfer needed for the apparatus to achieve its desired result. On Wednesday, May 15th, five teams of finalists presented their inventions to a panel of judges from the community. The winning machine, created by Simran Israni and Dana Carney, incorporated elements such as a vibrating cell phone, a sequence of toy cars and burning candles to cause a bottle of Coke to explode. Runners-up Carl Ash, Christopher Verheem and Justin Lee included a double-lever system, electromagnet, hair dryer and paddle wheel in their machine, which assisted with combing hair. Congratulations to all the 8th-grade inventors for their ingenuity and hard work.

8th Graders Enhance Study of Mexican-American History and Culture
Complementing their study of immigration in English and American History, 8th graders traveled to San Diego's Chicano Park and the "Lowrider Legends" exhibit at the Automotive Museum on Friday, May 10th. Students learned how peaceful protest led to the establishment of Chicano Park in the 1970's, and how it became one of the largest assemblages of public murals in North America. The lowrider exhibit added to their understanding of how immigrant communities have created ways to express their culture within mainstream American society.
Students admire the Automotive Museum's stylish lowriders.
An example of Chicano Park's vibrant murals.
