A Cappella Brings Home the Gold -- Again!
Congratulations to the Pacific Ridge A Cappella group for its award-winning performance at the Heritage Music Festival in San Francisco on March 22nd. At the festival, professional choral conductors adjudicate singing ensembles based on a national set of standards, and groups receive ratings for their performances. The Pacific Ridge A Cappella group earned a "gold" award, the highest rating possible at the festival, and has been invited to perform next year at the National Festival of Gold in Chicago and the National Youth Choir Concert in New York. You can view the performance here.

International Week Brings the World to Community Life
Pacific Ridge students experienced a number of cultures this week through daily Community Life presentations. On Monday, the Carlsbad High School Polynesian Dance Team introduced students to the dances of Polynesia and the South Pacific, along with traditional and contemporary music of those cultures. On Tuesday, Liberty in North Korea (LiNK) presented a film documenting the plight of a young man leading up to his escape from North Korea at the age of 17. LiNK is the only full-time grassroots organization in North America devoted to the North Korean human rights and humanitarian crises. On Wednesday, UCSD's Asayake Taiko group gave a dynamic performance of Japanese Taiko drumming, and on Thursday, members of the Brazilian Culture Center in San Diego performed live music and the traditional art form known as capoeira.

Curricular Adventures

Post-Colonial Africa Students Prepare to Blend Learning, Travel & Service
South Africa is the destination for one of this year's largest Upper School global travel groups. The trip will strive to bring to life the Post-Colonial Africa class's year-long study of the continent, and in particular students' examination of South African politics, culture and environment. Students will spend most of their time in Cape Town, visiting the townships, medical facilities and schools that are a large part of the class's study of South Africa. They will also visit important sites that highlight how the country functioned under the apartheid government. On a two-day trip to a game park, students will examine firsthand how the environment in Africa interacts with its people. Students will also provide a day of service at the Haven Night Shelter in Cape Town, delivering funds raised during the school year by the Haven Night Shelter service learning group.

Service Learning in the Field

Lingo Online Connects to Students Across the Globe
Established two years ago, the service learning group Lingo Online has been teaching English to students in South Korea, and is expanding its scope to include Taiwan, Denmark and China. Group members use their service learning time at school working on lesson plans and emailing contacts, then spend Friday evenings interacting with international students via Skype. The program is growing, thanks in part to Pacific Ridge's connections worldwide. Two Pacific Ridge teachers who have taught in Taiwanese schools are helping Lingo online members connect with school administrators in Taiwan. An exchange student from Denmark is introducing the group to Danish students who want to improve their English-speaking skills. And, when students from China's Shidong Shanghai High School visited Pacific Ridge in January, they were excited to earn about Lingo Online, and immediately asked if the group could help them continue to work on their English. One of our students from China provides translation to assist with teaching the Chinese students.
