Reminder: Make a Difference With Teens for Jeans
Over 1.7 million teenagers are homeless. The #1 item they request from shelters is a pair of Jeans. The Pacific Ridge Student Council is responding to that request by holding a Jeans Drive from January 14th to February 10th. Each Pacific Ridge class that donates an average of one pair of jeans per student will win a free Jeans Day on campus. Two pairs per student? Two Jeans Days. Jeans in good condition will be collected during weekly Advisory meetings. Check your closets, participate and make a difference!
Reminder: Help Our Community Stay Healthy During Flu Season
January is one of the peak "flu season" months. Parents, please encourage your children to practice preventive measures, such as hand washing, covering coughs and sneezes, and avoiding close contact with sick people. If your children get sick, please keep them home from school until they are fever-free for 24 hours. For more information, please visit www.cdc.gov or call the Pacific Ridge Nurse's Office at 760-448-9820.

M.U.N. team members celebrate at Columbia University Pacific Ridge Participates in Green Cup Challenge The Green Cup Challenge is an initiative run by the Green Schools Alliance to reduce energy consumption during January - generally the month with highest energy use - in schools across the U.S. The AP Environmental Science class's Sustainable Systems group is promoting Pacific Ridge's participation in the competition's California region. During the challenge, students and faculty are discussing and implementing strategies to lower energy use. Weekly meter readings are taken and submitted to a central database for comparison with other participating schools. To date, Pacific Ridge has lowered energy consumption by 9%. Quite an accomplishment for an already environmentally-minded school with a LEED-certified building! For more information about the challenge, which runs through February 13th, please click here. |

Help Give the Gift of Mobility With "Wheel Love" Drive
Have an old pair of crutches, cane, walker or a wheelchair? You can change the life of a disabled person by donating them. Inspired by a recent visit from Sam Nehemiah of the Challenged Athlete's Foundation, the Middle School Service Learning program is collecting wheelchairs and crutches for Sam's foundation, Champs Heart. The foundation's Project Nigeria program provides mobility and other independent living aids to disabled Nigerians, who often live without these essentials. Wheelchairs, walkers, canes or crutches can be dropped off in the designated donation area of the Athletic Center lobby from January 25th to February 8th.

Middle School Boys Soccer is On the Ball
The Middle School Boys A and B Soccer teams are deep into their seasons, enjoying 5-0 and 1-2-1 records, respectively. Facing opponents with a combination of intensity and good sportsmanship, the teams are building soccer skills, camaraderie and pride representing the school. Hans Richter, coach of the A Team, notes, "Our squad is made up of excellent individual players. I'm happy to see how, in our toughest games, the boys work together to achieve an even higher level of play." B Team coach Aaron Simmonds says "enthusiasm is the theme" for his boys, who just love to learn and play the game. Challenging practices led by Varsity coach David Boyett keep the players working at the peak of their skills. Come cheer on both teams at their next home games: the B Team plays Horizon Prep at 3:00 p.m., on January 29th, while the A Team takes on Santa Fe Christian at 3:00 p.m., on January 31st. Both games will be played at Aviara Community Park.
