  Break A Sweat Pennant

Breaking New Ground: Take Advantage of a Great Matching Opportunity!

In December, the Break A Sweat Campaign that built our new athletic center needed only $800,000 to reach its $10 million goal. Through the generosity of our community and a wonderful matching program, we made significant progress toward closing that gap by bringing in over $400,000 more dollars with the match. Gifts and pledges received through the end of January (and payable through June of 2014) may qualify for a 1, 2 or 3X match. Commitments of all sizes have been made, and can still help us reach our objective. Please consider what you can do to help and contact Kari Perry at kmperry@pacificridge.org, or 760-448-9845. Thank you!

Second Life for Your Gently Used Comfy Chair

The Library Learning Commons is in the process of creating a Reading Corner - a quiet place for students and adults to relax, read and maybe enjoy a cup of tea or hot chocolate. If you are in the process of remodeling, or simply have a comfortable upholstered chair you are getting rid of (no sofas or loveseats, please), the Reading Corner will happily give it new life. Donation documentation is available for tax purposes. Questions? Please contact Librarian Ellen Cothran at ecothran@pacificridge.org.

It's Flu Season! Help Our Community Stay Healthy

January is one of the peak "flu season" months. Parents, please encourage your children to practice preventive measures, such as hand washing, covering coughs and sneezes, and avoiding close contact with sick people. If your children get sick, please keep them home from school until they are fever-free for 24 hours. For more information, please visit www.cdc.gov or call the Pacific Ridge Nurse's Office at 760-448-9820.

Worldly-Wise Middle Schoolers Compete in Geography Bee

Noah Kuo '17 won the round and will represent Pacific Ridge at the competition's next level, a written examination to determine state finalists. Ethan Printz '18 outpaced contenders Nicole Morgan '17, Andrew Poole '17 and Avery Rogers '17 in a run-off for second place. Congratulations to all participants!

Teens for Jeans: Making A Difference
Over 1.7 million teenagers are homeless. The #1 item they request from shelters is a pair of Jeans. The Student Council is responding to that request by holding a Jeans Drive from January 14th to February 10th. Each Pacific Ridge class that donates an average of one pair of jeans per student will win a free Jeans Day on campus. Two pairs per student? Two Jeans Days. Jeans in good condition will be collected during weekly Advisory meetings. Check your closets, participate and make a difference!

Project Voice Brings Poetry to Community Life
On Wednesday, January 16th, students and faculty were treated to an exceptional Community Life presentation when Sarah Kay and Phil Kaye of Project V.O.I.C.E. brought the magic of spoken word poetry to the Pacific Ridge campus. The duo performed for an hour, delighting the entire school body with the creative delivery of their beautifully composed words. After the presentation, 9th graders, who are currently preparing for their orations, took part in a Project V.O.I.C.E. writing workshop. The performance and workshop inspired students to savor the power of words and to explore poetry as a way of exploring themselves.

Students will participate in such wide-ranging events as Forensics, Meteorology, Helicopters, Food Science and Experimental Design. Science Olympiad contests, which consist of either written tests, hands-on labs or engineering projects, give students an opportunity to explore their interest in science and celebrate their skills in a spirited, competitive environment. Service Learning in the Field

The Buddy Project Provides Friendship and Support
Upper School Service Learning group The Buddy Project works with a group of mentally and physically challenged students at the Flora Vista Elementary School in Encinitas. Pacific Ridge students pay weekly visits to the school, engaging the students in fun arts and crafts activities or outdoor play. The resulting bonds of friendship help strengthen the children's social relationships and communication skills. Group members enjoy serving as mentors, learn the values of patience and empathy, and gain an appreciation for the struggles some young children in our community are facing.
