Penny Wars Waged on Campus!
It was outright war - for a good cause. Students raised over $1,500 to support the Feeding America San Diego food bank this week by conducting "Penny Wars," a fun competition in which students in grades 7/8, 9/10, and 11/12 deposited pennies and other coins into designated jars on campus. Each team earned positive points for putting pennies in their own jar, while sabotaging other teams by putting larger coins and bills (negative points) in their jars. The 11th/12th grade team won the competition, but the biggest winners will be San Diego families in need who will receive fresh, nutritious food during the holidays.

Ms. Symington joins the battle.

Latin American Politics Students Engage in Lively Debate
On Tuesday, December 18th, students in Mr. Bosc's Latin American Politics class debated issues of growth and democracy in the region after studying various development theories and applying them to the history of Latin America during the Liberal Era (1870 - 1930). Using historical, social and economic data to support their arguments, four teams of students debated the relative merits of the theories in front of a panel of faculty and staff members. Panelists were uniformly impressed by the students' grasp of the material, as well as the confidence with which they articulated their positions.

Notes of Hope Brings Music to Sunrise Senior Living
Residents of Sunrise Senior Living in La Costa cheered and joined together in song when visited by the Notes of Hope Service Learning group in early December. The visit was the first by the newly-formed group, whose mission is to use music therapy to improve the health and happiness of adults in retirement homes and hospitals. Notes of Hope members have been working hard to develop a repertoire of music appropriate for their audiences, and hope to expand their reach to include children and adults with special needs.

Head Start Thanks You for Your Gift of Love
This week, students in the Middle School Head Start and Upper School Building Blocks Service Learning groups gathered up armfuls of donated toys and delivered them to shiny-eyed preschoolers at two Head Start locations in Carlsbad. Over 200 presents were donated by members of the Pacific Ridge community through the Head Start Holiday Gift Drive. The children, families and staff of Head Start would like to thank you for making this a joyful holiday to remember.

Boys Varsity Basketball Players Give Back to Community
On the weekend of December 15th and 16th, the Pacific Ridge boys Varsity Basketball team lent its time and effort to support the La Posada de Guadalupe homeless men's shelter in Carlsbad. The boys gathered after Saturday's practice to assemble gift bags for the residents of La Posada and purchase food for their holiday dinner. On Sunday, several team members and coaches delivered the gifts and sang Christmas carols with the men. The team showed true Firebird spirit through service at what is becoming an annual event.
