Seed Grant Applicants Seek to Help Communities in Need
On Friday, October 26th, nine Pacific Ridge juniors presented proposals to a panel of invited judges, to earn funding assistance for local and global service projects they have designed. The students' plans include such endeavors as developing and delivering English/Mandarin textbooks to a school in rural China, supporting homeless San Diegans by helping them document their plight, and using soccer to raise awareness of HIV/Aids in Kenya. Their proposals were met with praise and constructive feedback from the judges, and grants of up to $1,500 were awarded to several teams. Student participants included Sam Carney, Touran Fardeen, Keane Hindle, Eva Loeser, Kelsey Maloney, Jennifer Mastrianni, Kati Perry, Henry Poole, and Beckie Zheng.

Seed Grant applicants plan to turn their service ideas into reality.

Field Day Combines Friendly Competition, Silliness, & Fun
Last Friday, students, faculty and staff teamed up for a variety of fierce contests at Pacific Ridge's sixth annual Field Day tournament. Each team gave its all in whimsical competitions such as Potato Sack Soccer, Chicken Toss, Birdie on a Perch and the Hobby Horse Relay. The victorious Team Blue held off a hard-hitting Team Black to defend the Field Day Cup for the second year in a row. Congratulations to the Field Day champions, and to all who joined the fun.

Sustainability Group Combines Science with Service Middle Schoolers in the Sustainability Service Learning group are working hard each week at the Calavera Hills & Robertson Ranch Habitat Conservation Area. The students are performing an experiment by removing thatch from designated areas of the property while leaving adjacent areas alone. The thatch primarily consists of invasive grasses that threaten to overwhelm native, protected species. When the native plants start to grow in January, students will study the impact of the de-thatching, scientifically testing the theory that the treated areas will show more robust growth. The group's work is part of a five-year partnership between Pacific Ridge School and the Center for Natural Lands Management. For more information about the preserve, please visit CNLM.org.
