AP Music Theory Class Attends Staff Benda Bilili Concert
On Tuesday, October 23rd, Mr. Dziekonski and his AP Music Theory class traveled to UCSD to hear a performance by Staff Benda Bilili, a group of street musicians from the Democratic Republic of Congo. The band consists of older musicians who have learned to overcome severe physical handicaps, and a rhythm section of former abandoned street children adopted into the group's musical "family." Their music, rooted in Congolese rumba, combines an edgy, raw energy with polished vocal harmonies. According to Mr. Dziekonski, the performance was inspiring, and led to many thought-provoking conversations among his students.
