From Cinderella to Sondheim: Annual Musical Announced
At Wednesday's Community Life, an ambitious and talented group of Pacific Ridge faculty and staff performed musical vignettes from this year's annual musical, Into the Woods. Students cheered and laughed, then listened attentively as Ms. Trattner described the challenges and benefits of performing this award-winning Sondheim musical. Into the Woods, which debuted at San Diego's Old Globe Theatre in 1986, weaves together the plots of several Brothers Grimm fairy tales and explores the consequences of the characters' wishes and adventures. Please mark your calendar for performance dates on February 7th - 9th. Auditions commence on October 23rd. Students interested in performing or participating as part of the crew should contact Ms. Trattner at atrattner@pacificridge.org.

Catch the Spirit of Cal Math League!
Each month, Pacific Ridge students can earn spirit points for their grades by participating in the Cal Math League. The program consists of monthly 30-minute contests, during which students address six creative and mind-bending math questions. Students earn one spirit point each for competing. By enlisting a faculty member to participate with them, students can earn two spirit points. Parents, encourage your children to stop by the Learning Commons during lunch and hone their problem-solving skills over a free slice of pizza. It's fun! The year's first competition is coming up on Friday, October 19th. For more information, please visit the Cal Math League website.

Local Lunch Makes Academics Edible
On October 8th, ninth-grade students tried their hands at farm-to-table cuisine when they planned, prepared and presented a "local lunch" to the school community. Working in small groups, students created a lunch for themselves and one community guest using entirely local (defined as within San Diego County) food and food products. Each group also provided a map describing the foods and noting where they were obtained, data sheets logging their search for ingredients, and a presentation board to display the project's information.

Touching on their studies in Ancient World History, English and Biology, the activity informed students' understanding of the challenges and opportunities that agriculture creates for human societies.

Sample Menu: Rockfish with mango chutney, rosemary roasted potatoes with celery root, grilled Brussels sprouts, baby carrots, and orange-lemon-limeade
