Webinar: Change Management
webinar

Join us on Thursday, October 18th, at 11am ET, for this month's "webucation"

Change Management: One University's Evolution from Chaos to Calm

with John Borwick and Rita Mewing, from Wake Forest University

Wake Forest University implemented department-wide IT service change management in 2008. The process has persisted and flourished during a CIO transition and a major service management tool upgrade. Now in 2012, the process appears to be anchored in our culture. This presentation summarizes the lessons learned with the implementation and subsequent improvements.

"I would like to tell you how pleased I was with the ITIL training seminar. I felt that all the people involved in the process, from the registration process, through the actual training, to the attached email that you sent me, "every one cared"... perhaps this is the single most critical attribute to your office team. I have already recommended this course at your location to one ex employee of mine, and will continue to do so going forward. Again, thank you all for caring for the students as your guests during the training sessions."

Election Day Trivia

We know that election day occurs on the first Tuesday after the first Monday of every November, but did you ever stop and wonder WHY?

Well, for much of our history, America was a predominantly agrarian society. Lawmakers therefore took into account that November was perhaps the most convenient month for farmers and rural workers to be able to travel to the polls. The fall harvest was over, but in the majority of the nation the weather was still mild enough to permit travel over unimproved roads.

Why Tuesday? Since most residents of rural America had to travel a significant distance to the county seat in order to vote, Monday was not considered reasonable since many people would need to begin travel on Sunday. This would, of course, have conflicted with church services and Sunday worship.

Why the first Tuesday after the first Monday? Lawmakers wanted to prevent Election Day from falling on the first of November for two reasons. First, November 1 is All Saints Day, a Holy Day of Obligation for Roman Catholics. Second, most merchants were in the habit of doing their books from the preceding month on the first. Apparently, Congress was worried that the economic success or failure of the previous month might prove an undue influence on the vote.

We all know that this election day is November 6, 2012, and you may be asking yourself "why should I vote?"

- Because in 1996, among the world's 20 biggest democracies, voter turnout in the U.S. was lower than every country except Switzerland. Belgium was top of the list with 94 percent.
