Panthers Edge Out Highlanders

The Pinewood Panthers football team edged Heathwood Hall Friday night in a thrilling game at home winning 14-7.

Heathwood Hall's opening drive in the first quarter was so seamless it seemed that it would be a long night ahead for Pinewood.   On their first possession the Highlanders had three successful passes before connecting on a 59 yard pass and play to Brandon Hill for a touchdown. The PAT was good for the visitors to lead 7-0 and as things turned out this would be Heathwood Hall's only points of the evening.

Pinewood's opening drive was promising with Leslie Redden making some headway on several carries. The drive would result in a punt. On the Highlanders second drive of the quarter they managed to march their way down the field all the way to the 8 yard line. It was the Pinewood defense that held tough and stopped the visitors from scoring. Pinewood made some headway again late in the first quarter including a 30 yard pass from Lewis Vaughan to Casey Brabham. The clock wound down with the score still at 7-0.

The Panthers still had possession at the beginning of the second quarter and on 4th down decided to go for it. The throw was an incompletion and the Highlanders took over. On the very next play the Heathwood Hall quarter back threw a pass and it was to be intercepted by Braven Yagin on the 20 yard line. On Pinewood's next play Vaughan threw a 20 yard pass deep in to the end zone for Michael Wright and he would come down with the ball for the Panthers first score of the night. The PAT was good by Ryan Huiet and the score was tied at 7-7.

There was a number of possession changes late in the second quarter and again the Panthers defense held strong and refused the visitors a score. The half would end at 7-7.

Late in the third quarter a penalty by the Highlanders put Pinewood in good field position. With 25 yards to go quarter back Vaughan kept the ball and ran in for a touchdown. The point after by Huiet was good and Pinewood took the lead at 14-7.

The fourth quarter proved to be a nail biting affair with possession again changing hands several times. A series of drives by Pinewood managed to take some significant time off the clock. With 58 seconds left in the game Heathwood Hall took over and made it an interesting final last minute to the game making two complete passes. Time was fortunately not on their side and with the clock winding down it was Pinewood who came away with the big win.

Head Coach Michael Wright said, "I was pleased with how the team played and how they kept it together at the end. The defense made some key plays not allowing Heathwood Hall to score. We have a tough game next week but this will give us some confidence going into the game".

The Panthers are now 3-3 on the season and travel away to Augusta Christian on Friday and will encounter a Lions squad coming off a loss last week. Game time is 7:30pm.

P.A.C. has had a mission to provide support for and promote camaraderie with in the athletic programs of Pinewood Preparatory School. The funding they provide covers things needed by the Athletic Department that may not be covered in the general budget. We have had the generous support of Pinewood families that has allowed P.A.C. to be major contributors over the years to Eidson Gym, the Fieldhouse, the lighting project for the athletic fields, the tennis facility, new soccer goals, assistance to Sporting Clays, baseball field windscreens, pool rental for swim team and several other projects around campus. They have also provided funding for portable IED machines, athletic training supplies and concussion testing for all athletes.

This group of volunteers take tremendous pride in knowing that our coaches and athletes have what they need for their teams , due to the work and funding provided by the organization. The funding for P.A.C. primarily comes from the annual membership drive. The support given by the Panther Athletic Club is not only providing for our current athletes but for our future Pinewood athletes.

The organization meets once a month and the meetings are open to all members. The date, time and location of the meetings will be listed in our weekly athletic newsletter. Please consider joining and becoming a part of this team.

"Volkswagen as a brand has always been a family-oriented vehicle, since the early days of the 'Beetle' and the 'Bus'," Travis said.  "So it suits us well to make sure that we treat every customer like they're part of the Stokes Volkswagen family.  That's probably why our customers refer their friends and family, and visit as often as they can."
