THE BENEFITS OF CUPPING THERAPY
by Dr. Ming Wu, AOBTA-CP, Ph.D.
Many readers are probably already familiar with some of the more popular therapies of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), such as acupuncture and herbal medicine.
But did you know that there is another lesser-known TCM treatment
known as cupping that can help relieve a host of maladies?
The ancient Chinese Medicine technique of cupping entails placing suction cups on the skin (typically on a patient's back) along five meridian lines in order to both align and relax the qi and open up all the channels and thus promote energy flow. "Massage Magazine" reports that clients who received cupping sessions found that it relieved chronic pain and helped improve range of motion to injured areas. The clients who experienced this pain relief reported that the effects lasted longer than the pain relief associated with other massage modalities. "Cupping is one of the best deep-tissue therapies available," states the Pacific College of Oriental Medicine (PCOM). "It is thought to affect tissues up to four inches deep from the external skin. Toxins can be released, blockages can be cleared, and veins and arteries can be refreshed within these four inches. Even hands, wrists, legs, and ankles can be 'cupped,' thus applying the healing to specific organs that correlate with specific meridian points."
Cupping therapy has also been effectively used to treat lung and respiratory conditions, including asthma symptoms and the common cold. In fact, respiratory ailments are among the earliest recorded conditions for which cupping therapy was deemed beneficial.
As with all therapies, one should use discretion as there are several instances when cupping should not be performed. Patients with inflamed skin, patients with high fever or convulsions and patients who are taking drugs that may increase the risk of bleeding, who have a low platelet count or who bleed easily are not suitable candidates for cupping. Also, pregnant women should not have cupping on their stomach or lower back. For more details, read the full article on the Wu Healing website. Sign up for the workshop to learn the Cupping Technique. See details below.
