Marketing Tools & Tips For Your Small Business
March 2013
Greetings!

Liz Provo
Every once in a while it's good to step outside of our comfort zones, in business and in our personal lives.  I don't normally make New Year's resolutions, but this year I set some goals for myself that have definitely challenged my comfort zone.

My first goal was to follow the advice I give to my clients. "Have a professional photo taken that you can keep in your Press Kit to use in all your marketing." Confession: I hate having my picture taken and up till now I could give you any number of excuses for checking this off my to do list.  Not so any more!  My heartfelt thanks to Barry Scott (Barry Scott Photography) for helping me overcome my fear with his patient nature and warm personality.  I am looking forward to recommend Barry's photography services to all my clients!

My second goal was to become more physically active.  As someone who is glued to a computer for much of the day, my exercise consisted of an afternoon dog walk -- not bad, but I knew I could do more.  In January I joined the Jog Walk group at McGannon Fitness. Wendy is a wonderful motivator and she's helped me a lot.  I also began a Couch To 5K training program with the goal of participating in my first ever 5K event this spring. I have never run in my entire life. I'm now on Week 5 and haven't missed a session yet, although it is definitely a challenge.

My third goal was to build up my video tutorial library to help people feel more comfortable with social media and technology.  I'm happy to say this project is right on schedule. You can subscribe to my YouTube channel to be notified when new tutorials are uploaded.

What goals have you set for yourself this year?  Are you staying on track?  Want to chat?

This Month's Marketing Tutorial:  Tagging LinkedIn Connections

Using LinkedIn Tags To Organize Connections
Using LinkedIn Tags To Organize Connections
LinkedIn is a powerful professional networking social media platform. Hopefully, you have created a profile, added your photo and have begun to build a list of connections or contacts. Understanding the relationship you have with each of your connections is important and this knowledge will help you make the most of all your relationships.

One easy way that you can organize your contacts is through the use of "tagging".  When you tag a connection, you are associating that person with a group, profession or other genre.  A tag helps you keep track of how you know someone which can lead to solidifying relationships, providing referrals to others and communicating to groups of like-minded individuals.

This tutorial will show you how to create, assign and use tags to make the most of your professional connections on LinkedIn.

FoursquareSocial Media Focus:  Foursquare

Foursquare is a social media platform (website and phone app) that's terrific for small business awareness. Using GPS mapping technology, your business (retail, restaurant, fitness center, hair salon, etc.) can be seen by potential buyers of your products and services as they "explore" neighborhoods. You can attract new customers or reward loyal ones by posting updates, listing events, or offering specials to entice people to stop by your business. Oh, you can
also add businesses that are not storefronts.

The neat thing about Foursquare right now is that many small businesses haven't found it yet. That means YOUR business is more likely to stand out.  I love Foursquare when I'm traveling as I find lots of services (and coupons!) that I'd never know about without the app. If you'd like to learn more about using Foursquare as part of your mobile marketing strategy, let's talk.

Your business might already exist on Foursquare, so check to see if someone has added it already and "claim" it.  If you're ready to add your business, here's how to get started.
