TRANSFER CONNECTIONS
SEPTEMBER 2013

Welcome to the 2013-2014 year from the

Office of Orientation & Leadership Development

The transition to a new university can be unfamiliar to some, but there are plenty of resources to assist navigating the U. Our office is excited to debut several new programs, including Transfer Tuesdays, generally held monthly for transfer students. Keep updated on our initiatives and programs by following our office on Twitter and liking our office Facebook page.

Transfer students generally have a different experience than first-year students, and there are programs specifically designed to assist in becoming more familiar with the University.  We encourage you to get involved and be a part of our new programs.

Student Support Services

There are many resources available to you as a transfer student to ensure your success here at the University of Utah. A regular feature of Transfer Connections will be a description of a few of these resources. The variety available provides convenience and opportunities, ranging from childcare to student involvement.

Associated Students of the University of Utah (ASUU)

"Being a transfer student myself, I know it's not always easy finding your place once again on a completely new and different campus. I was fortunate enough to find ASUU. ASUU is not just our student government but also runs many programs, events and boards that offer students incredible opportunities to get involved, make friends and make a difference on campus. I was able to find several places in ASUU that fit my interests perfectly such as the Government Relations board, the Diversity board and the Community Service board. I was able to get to know the campus much better and quicker as well as make connections with others who cared about the same things I did. If you are a transfer student I would highly recommend looking at getting involved in ASUU. Getting involved will make all the difference!"

Leadership Development/ Learning to Lead

No matter what major or career goals you have, a vital component of any future job will be a strong grasp of leadership. Within the Office of Orientation and Leadership Development there are lots of different opportunities to start intentionally developing your leadership skills. There are monthly Leadership Workshops that tackle a specific theme and skill. The first one is September 20, 11:30am-12:30pm, in the Union Room 323 and will cover Goal Setting, an important topic to start out the school year! On October 24, from 12pm-1pm, in the Union Den, the topic will be Time Management. Also, be sure to reserve November 22-23 for the annual Learning to Lead Conference where you'll be able to select from a wide variety of programs to find the one that will benefit and interest you most!  If you would like to stay up-to-date on all the leadership development opportunities offered, send an email to [email protected].

Student Activity Committees (SAC)

Student Advisory Committees (SAC) are student groups established within each academic department (i.e. Biology or English) to promote communication and interaction among students, faculty, staff, and administrators. SACs are both an academic and social organization within their department. SACs were created to provide students with more opportunities to offer input at the department level. For more information about SAC visit www.asuu.utah.edu/sac-funding/ or call 801-581-2788 with any questions.
