Travel Apps on your Wrist

The Apple Watch will launch with several useful apps for business travelers.

When the Apple Watch becomes available next month (release is scheduled for April 24 in the U.S.), industry experts expect travel apps to be among its strongest offerings. We've taken a look at a few of the apps you can expect to see.

Airlines

American Airlines' app will offer on-wrist notifications when it's time to leave for the airport to make your flight, gate change announcements and other flight updates, as well as online check-in. In-flight, travelers will be able to view a flight progress map, flight time, baggage claim information and connection details (presumably, this requires purchase of in-flight Wi-Fi). Delta Air Lines' watch app will offer notifications of plane arrival, delays and gate changes, as well as an electronic boarding pass via iOS's Passbook, luggage claim information and a "welcome" message when a traveler's flight approaches the destination city. United Airlines' app will show flight details and work with Passbook to provide an electronic boarding pass. Easy Jet, Emirates, Qantas and British Airways are also building apps that should be out with the Apple Watch.

Hotels

SPG by Starwood

Starwood Hotels & Resorts' SPG app will allow arriving guests to bypass the front desk by checking in via the watch app and using the watch to open their room doors via NFC. It will also offer directions to the hotel and show Starpoints balance. Marriott International hasn't unveiled many details, but it has said its app will allow mobile check-in and notification when a room is ready. The company also said it will be the first major hotel group to accept Apple Pay, which is part of the Apple Watch.

Travel and Dining Services

Expedia has the most full-featured offering, with itinerary, hotel and flight information, including gates, terminals, seat assignments, check-in and check-out times and locations. TripAdvisor's app will offer the site's restaurant, site and tourist destination information, formatted for the tiny screen. Places Around will point you to nearby restaurants, cash machines, gas stations and parking, via a selection menu or voice request. OpenTable will offer information about booked reservations and a map to the restaurant.

Getting Around

Person-to-person vehicle service Über will offer an Apple Watch app that shows available nearby cars for hire, lets you request a car and displays an image of the car and driver, the license plate and the driver's rating. Apple's own Maps app will display directions to most destinations, vibrating on the wrist when it's time to turn. The Citymapper app will offer public transit guidance in cities around the world, with instructions for finding the nearest train or bus and vibrations to tell you when you're approaching your stop.

MileWiz automatically logs miles in the car so they can be tracked for expense reports.

InterContinental Hotels' IHG Translator App

Language

InterContinental Hotels' IHG Translator App will allow travelers to translate from English into 13 different languages in real-time, by speaking into the watch or choosing from a selection of common phrases. The Babbel app will display words that might be useful, based on a person's location.

And...

Among the most useful features the watch will offer: Just like a cell phone, it will automatically adjust to the time zone you land in, accounting even for Daylight Savings Time.
