News Spotlight: Keeping up With Travel Health Alerts

A new mobile app aims to help travelers keep up with health alerts and vaccine recommendations around the world

By Rochelle Broder-Singer

While most international business travel doesn't entail any health risks at all, it's nonetheless a good idea to keep on top of health concerns in any area to which you're traveling. Finding the latest alerts and vaccine recommendations can be a challenge, and the app My Travel Health aims to bring all the information into a single place in your mobile device.

My Travel Health, created by U.S.-based Travel Health and Wellness, is only available for Apple iOS devices. It covers 200 countries with travel health advisories and alerts, vaccine recommendations for each country from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, as well as links to each location's U.S. embassy website for local health information and assistance. It offers up a modifiable packing list and pre-travel to-do list for each location, as well as general travel health content licensed from the Mayo Clinic, the famed hospital in Rochester, Minnesota, where Travel Health and Wellness's chief medical officer is a consultant in travel and tropical medicine. The app also offers storage space for pictures of your passport, visa, prescriptions, medication list, immunization records, travel insurance information and other health-related data.

The app's greatest flaw is that it gives information only on the country level. Many vaccine requirements and health advisories apply only to certain areas of a country - for instance, the Amazon rainforest, rather than the urban capital city. As a business traveler, it's still difficult to know what to discard and what to follow. My Travel Health does help by dividing recommendations by "All Travelers," "Most Travelers" and "Some Travelers."

My Travel Health is priced at US$2.99 on the Apple App Store.
