Hackers Hit Some American, United Frequent Flier Accounts

By Andrea Carneiro

Now might be a good time to recheck your online frequent flier mile account. Both American Airlines and United Airlines confirmed last week that their mileage programs (AAdvantage and MileagePlus respectively) were hacked, with American customers taking damage to about 10,000 accounts. Hackers were able to access member accounts and, in some cases, fraudulently redeem miles for award travel. Both airlines have blamed customer reuse of user names, email addresses and passwords on multiple sites and believe hackers accessed information from a third party, which they then used to breach mileage accounts.

Both airlines have also issued statements that they have notified and frozen affected accounts, restored miles to those who lost them and have changed account numbers and passwords. United has also begun asking customers to input a MileagePlus account number at login, in a move to make access more difficult for hackers.
