Quick Getaway: Colonia

Old World architectural splendor and easygoing charm fill this Uruguayan town, just an hour away from Buenos Aires

By Mark Holston

Those on a business or pleasure trip to Buenos Aires with a little time on their hands shouldn't miss the opportunity to take a one-day excursion across the Rio de la Plata river to spend a few hours in the Uruguayan town of Colonia. They'll quickly discover why this one-of-a-kind historic setting has been charming visitors for centuries.

In the whole of Latin America, few locales can match Colonia's unique blend of easygoing ambiance and Old World architectural splendor. UNESCO (the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) cited the town's "well-preserved urban landscape" when it named Colonia a "World Heritage Site" in 1995. Among its important characteristics, UNESCO pointed out, is the "successful fusion of the Portuguese, Spanish and post-colonial styles."

Some who've been to Colonia liken it to a spending an idyllic afternoon in a small port in Portugal or Spain. Situated at the tip of a peninsula and blessed with constant, refreshing breezes from the nearby river estuary, there is a distinctly Mediterranean air about the place. After the Portuguese founded the town in 1680, Colonia del Sacramento, as it is formally known, remained in their hands for almost a century. Eventually, the Spanish conquered it and began to impose their culture and architectural schemes.

Today, cobblestone streets remain prevalent in the historic district, helping to reinforce an overall "lost in time" mood. Outdoor restaurants line several tree-shaded boulevards, providing a restful setting for casual dining. Vintage autos of the 1920s and 1930s, long a symbol of 20th-century Uruguay, can occasionally be seen chugging along the roads, adding another colorful historic detail.

It is the influence of the 15th-century Portuguese, however, that makes a particularly strong impression in Colonia. It is reflected in the austere, whitewashed faades of the many churches and public buildings that have survived through periods of strife. Today's residents have contributed to Colonia's charm, adorning their simple one-story homes with vivid pastel colors.

Historic sites and archaeological digs are dotted around Colonia. Among the must-see sights are El Torren, a Spanish windmill that today is one of the town's most popular restaurants, and the always-visible lighthouse, built in 1857 and still in use by the Uruguayan coast guard to aid in regional navigation.

What makes a visit to Colonia so practical is its close proximity to Buenos Aires - a mere hour on high-speed ferry boats that cross the river throughout the day. Spectacular views of Buenos Aires are a nice fringe benefit of the trip. Plan on leaving early and returning late to enjoy all that Colonia has to offer.
