Insider View:

Navigating Guatemala City's La Aurora International Airport

With tourism board director Pedro Duchez

Business travelers to Guatemala are typically heading either to Guatemala City or Antigua - or sometimes both, as the two cities are just 45 minutes apart. International travelers will enter the country at La Aurora International Airport in Guatemala City, which is 6.4 kilometers south of the city center and about 24 kilometers from Antigua.

Antigua

The airport is the fourth busiest in Central America in terms of passenger traffic. Pedro Duchez, director of INGUAT - Guatemala's tourism board - shared his best tips for navigating the airport, as well as a few other important pieces of advice for travelers.

What's the best place in La Aurora to grab a quick meal while waiting for a flight?

Even though the airport is small, there are many options available. You have the food court located near the airline counters or other options located on the second floor, near the duty free area. There are also two VIP lounges: Los Añejos, which is for Priority Pass members and Avianca first class passengers), and a second lounge for Star Alliance members. There you will have free Internet, food, drinks, TV, newspapers, local calls and other items.

What are the airport's biggest surprises?

We have one of the best duty free stores in the region when it comes to price and variety. (A great souvenir is local Guatemalan coffee available as packaged coffee beans or ground.) Travelers can also find delicious coffee for free at the Anacafe kiosk.

What's the most important thing a traveler should know about La Aurora to make his or her trip smoother?

Keep your boarding pass (with your luggage tag number) with you until you are out; sometimes security will ask to see it to assure you're walking out with the correct luggage.

Any other insider's tips for travel to Guatemala?

Try to exchange your money before traveling to Guatemala, or exchange it at the airport or at a local bank. It may be difficult to find currency exchange places outside the airport and not all places accept credit cards. ... Also, the best way to travel within both cities is via private taxi, which can be requested by the hotel.

Guatemala's Two Top Destinations: Guatemala City and Antigua

Duchez's take on these two very distinct cities, just 45 minutes apart

Guatemala City is the capital and the main airport for travelers to enter the country. It a metropolitan city where many main company offices are situated but there are also great areas to explore such as the Zona Viva or the Historic Center to see the National Palace and other important monuments.

Antigua, on the other hand, is - aside from the country's #1 city attraction - a beautiful and very colorful, colonial city that boasts a beautiful backdrop of volcanoes. Here one will find fantastic architecture, culture and unique boutique properties worth experiencing.
