Hidden Gems: Mate

Visitors to the southernmost region of South America will quickly notice local residents enjoying one of the area's true obsessions -- the seemingly nonstop consumption of mate.

Mate, or Yerba mate, as it is also known, is a hot, highly caffeinated drink prepared by infusing dried yerba mate leaves in hot water. Its users believe it has a variety of health benefits, from treating headaches, prompting weight loss and relieving fatigue to lessening depression. They are not deterred by studies conducted by the Mayo Clinic and other research organizations, which have concluded that the consumption of mate can't be linked to any verifiable health benefits. A long-entrenched social custom, sipping the steaming brew is a daily routine that cuts across all social and economic classes.

A plant native to the region, mate was cultivated and used by the Guaraní people for centuries before European colonizers arrived. Its use quickly gained favor with Spanish and Portuguese settlers, and over the course of hundreds of years the daily use of the herb has become all but routine for millions of residents of Argentina, Uruguay, Paraguay, Chile, Bolivia and southern Brazil.

Uruguayans are among the most ardent consumers of the drink. Remigio "Tato" Moreno, a Montevideo advertising agency executive, is seldom without a thermos bottle of hot water, a bombilla (the metal straw that filters the drink), and an ornate, silver-ornamented calabash gourd, the vessel most commonly used to brew mate. "People drink it everywhere," he notes. "At work, while studying, strolling, relaxing with family and friends." Moreno adds that it's not unusual to see Uruguayans on trips abroad sipping their mate as they enjoy the sights of Miami, Paris or London. "People are really addicted to mate," he admits. "You can't go too long without drinking it."

The international popularity of this herbal tea has grown in recent years and exports to such diverse nations as Lebanon, Kenya, Spain, Germany and the United States have steadily increased. In the U.S. and elsewhere, mate has also begun to make inroads in the cold, carbonated health drink sector.

Not surprisingly, mate makes an excellent gift for business travelers to bring back from the Southern Cone. Visitors will find a wide range of mate brands in local supermarkets. Some are strong while others are smoother. Whether the leaves are ground finely or more coarsely, with some little fine branches remaining (known as con palo), also makes a difference.

Mate accoutrements, too, make excellent gifts. They can be simple and inexpensive or elaborate and pricey. High-end sets of bombillas, gourds and thermos bottles packaged in a fashionable leather carrying case make a unique gift.
