Ebola Screenings at Airports

By Rochelle Broder-Singer

Ebola Virus (Red)

Airports around the world have begun or stepped up screening for Ebola virus risks in passengers arriving from West Africa - particularly Liberia, Sierra Leone and Guinea.

Reports from travelers indicate that the screenings so far have been inconsistent, and it's not clear whether they are mandatory or voluntary. In most countries, screening consists of filling out detailed health questionnaires or answering interview questions and having their temperatures taken. Those with fevers are generally referred for additional screening, with very suspicious cases sent to a nearby hospital via ambulance. Travelers originating in West Africa are also being given literature with information about who to contact and what measures to take if they fear they may have been infected with or show symptoms of Ebola.

In the U.S., New York's John F. Kennedy International Airport, Newark Liberty International Airport (New Jersey), Chicago O'Hare International Airport, Atlanta Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport (Georgia) and Washington, D.C.'s Dulles International Airport have instituted checks. London Heathrow Airport began doing checks in one terminal, with plans to extend the checks to all terminals, London Gatwick airport and Eurostar rail service by the end of next week.

In South America, Peru and Uruguay will institute airport measures and Mexico and Nicaragua plan to tighten controls on migrants headed for the U.S.
