News Spotlight: A New Operator at Rio de Janeiro's Airport

Can a Brazilian/Singaporean partnership make over Brazil's largest airport in time to make a difference for the 2016 Olympics?

Rio de Janeiro/Galećo-Tom Jobim International Airport

Brazilian conglomerate Odebrecht and Singapore's Changi Airports International took over operations of Rio de Janeiro/Galećo-Tom Jobim International Airport in August. Along with Brazilian government-owned airport operator Infraero, which retains a 49% stake in the airport, the partnership operates as RIOgalećo. The group plans to make $2.2 billion worth of improvements to the airport, $890 million of which will take place before the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio.

So far, RIOgalećo has added 250 new signs to Tom Jobim Airport, along with new eateries. Travelers now have 30 minutes of free Wi-Fi access and streamlined check-ins. Also on tap are a new 26-gate concourse, increased airplane parking spots, new traffic flows and an increase in the number and frequency of international flights. It also slightly altered the airport's name, which had been Antōnio Carlos Jobim/Galećo International Airport.

Hurricane Odile

Storm Updates

The after-effects of Hurricane Odile are still being felt in Baja California and Baja California Sur in Mexico. The Category 3 hurricane made landfall near Cabo San Lucas on Sunday, tied for the most powerful storm ever recorded to have hit Baja California Sur. It destroyed parts of Cabo San Lucas, causing building collapses and flooding. Many areas have no electricity, and some have no potable water. Los Cabos International Airport and General Manuel Marquez De Leon International Airport, in the state's capital city of La Paz, sustained heavy damage during the storm, and officials have said they will be closed to most traffic until September 22.

Many airports, hotels, roads, homes and other buildings in Cabo San Lucas, Puerto Vallarta and other cities in the area sustained substantial damage (some hotels collapsed). Although Odile was downgraded to a tropical storm by Tuesday, airports in the area are still not operating at capacity, and there is a backlog of some 30,000 stranded travelers. The storm also continued to unleash torrential rain, leading to flooding or potential flooding in Baja California and several U.S. states, including Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, Oklahoma and Missouri.

Meanwhile, in the southern part of the U.S. state of California, ongoing monsoon-level rain and record-breaking heat led to flooding and downed power lines in some areas.
