Venezuela Closes Colombian Border at Night

The Venezuela/Colombia border

By Rochelle Broder-Singer

On August 11, the Venezuelan government began shutting down its border with Colombia every night from 10:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m. Ground, air and river travel are all affected. Cargo vehicles, including vans and trucks, are banned from crossing the border beginning at 6:00 p.m. The measures are set to last for at least 30 days, after which the Venezuelan government will re-evaluate the situation.

Venezuela is trying to stop smugglers from moving subsidized food, gas and other staples into Colombia. Such goods sell for much higher prices in that nation, because the Venezuelan government subsidizes or controls their pricing inside its borders. So far this year, authorities have seized more than 40 million liters of gas (10.6 million gallons) and 21,000 tons of food illegally crossing the border.

The Colombian government consented to the closures, which cover 1,360 miles (2,200 kilometers) of border.
