Concierge's Tips - Buenos Aires

Sightseeing, shopping and getting the most for your currency: The Alvear Palace's Chief of Golden Keys answers travelers' leisure questions

By Mark Holston

Part 2 of 2

Alejandro Noya, the head concierge and weekend manager-on-duty of Buenos Aires' legendary Alvear Palace, has worked at the hotel for 28 years. His years serving both business and leisure travelers have given him extra insight into making the most of time in the city. If you have a few hours during your next trip there, here are his recommendations:

Excursions and Where to Shop

Noya strongly recommends a three-hour city tour for guests who are in Buenos Aires for the first time. "We have a relationship with a semi-private company to conduct these tours," he notes. "They are inexpensive and take only 10 or 12 people. These tours give a good idea of the city's history. For an all day experience, we advise taking a trip to Tigre, in the river delta country just outside of the city, or to an estancia -- a country estate. During the season, we also suggest attending polo matches, because here they are the best in the world."

The Alvear Palace itself is located in one of the city's most exclusive neighborhoods, and there is great shopping in hotel boutiques and nearby stores. Many guests are interested in leather goods and shoes, and two of the best traditional shops, Lopez Taibo and Zapateria Guido, are within walking distance of the hotel.

Discreet Advice

Even some the hotel's well-to-do guests are interested in exchanging foreign currency on the black market, and while such transactions are technically illegal, Noyes says that the information is something that everyone knows, so the hotel's concierges can point a client in the right direction if asked. "We always try to help our guests," he says. "I'll suggest where to go. Maybe it's a commercial establishment in the hotel where they might be able to get a good rate. I would never suggest going to one of the common areas because that could be dangerous. Sometimes, a guest will come up to tell me that they've paid 40% less on some purchase. And, they'll add with a big smile, 'Thank you, Alexander!'"
