Copa Curiosities

Souvenirs to seek out from the World Cup

By Mark Holston

While only one champion will emerge from among the 32 national teams that arrived in Brazil in early June to battle for the World Cup fútbol crown, off the pitch it's a different story. Many are the winners who banked on the voracious appetite of fanatical soccer fans around the world for Copa Mundial souvenirs. From inexpensive, unauthorized trinkets and knock-off soccer shirts to such high end sanctioned products as official team jerseys and banners, the games have proven to be a field day for enterprising entrepreneurs.

The close-up images of cheering fans in Brazil's soccer stadiums have told the most obvious part of the story. Every man, woman and child in attendance has been decked out in his or her national team's colorful jersey. Then there are the goofy-looking, cat-in-the-hat type headwear and oversized sunglasses color-coded to replicate the image of each country's flag.

FIFA (Fédération Internationale de Football Association), the World Cup's organizer, authorizes the manufacture and sale of specific items. Not surprisingly, jerseys are the most popular item but not the only one by far. The fashion- and jewelry-conscious might be attracted to official FIFA scarves and charm bracelets. Posters, decals, tee shirts, pins and the colorful official version of the ball itself are all top sellers. Not wanting to miss out on any sales opportunities, FIFA also maintains a stock of official products celebrating all World Cup tournaments - going all the way back to the first one, held in Uruguay in 1930.

Two particularly distinctivemementos of the games that visitors should seek out bear their Brazilian attitude proudly.A Copa-themed series of beloved Havaianas sandals, regarded as the world's best rubber flip flops, come in a versions for each participating country. The sandals incorporate both national colors and the country's name into the design, and are proudly made by Brazilian company Alpargatas.

Those with a thirst for cachaça,Brazil's popular sugarcane brandy, should seek out a special edition produced for the games by the appropriately-named Pé De Cana (foot of the cane), a small distillery based in Brazil's Minas Gerais state. Bottles of the fiery spirit come dressed up with labels sporting the flags of all 32 nations. They make a great way to celebrate a victory or nurse the agony of defeat.
