U.S. Airlines Stricter About Carry-On Sizes

By Rochelle Broder-Singer

Frequent fliers report that American Airlines, Delta Air Lines and United Airlines have become stricter about enforcing size limits on carry-on bags. American and United - as well as American merger partner USAir - specify that carry-on bags have maximum dimensions of 56 centimeters long, 36 centimeters wide and 23 centimeters tall (22 inches x 14 inches x 9 inches) - including wheels and handles. Delta requires that carry-on bags not exceed a total of 45 linear inches, but notes that they must fit in its sizers, which measure "approximately 22 inches by 14 inches by 9 inches or 56 by 35 by 23 centimeters."

Most suitcases - especially wheeled ones - that are sold today as carry-on size are more than 35 centimeters wide. Although these airlines have allowed travelers to carry them on in the past, they may no longer allow it.

Other U.S. airlines and international airlines have may have slightly larger carry-on maximums. JetBlue Airways and Southwest Airlines have a maximum bag size of 60.96 centimeters long, 40.64 centimeters wide and 25.4 centimeters high (24 inches x 16 inches x 10 inches).

Finally, American Airlines recently relaxed its policy on "personal items" - the second item you can bring onto an airplane, along with your carry-on bag. Laptop bags, briefcases, purses, tote bags and other personal items must simply be smaller than your carry-on bag and fit under the seat in front of you. American and some other airlines also allow passengers to bring on a soft-sided garment bag that measures no more than 130 centimeters (51 inches) in total as a carry-on bag.
