An airport upgrade, and Brazil's plans to grow business during the World Cup

There are plenty of concerns about how Brazil will handle the World Cup, which starts today and will be played in 12 Brazilian cities through July 13. Some 600,000 additional foreign tourists are expected to flood the country, which last year had around 5.6 million visitors. That's in addition to Brazilians traveling the country for matches from Port Alegre in the far south to Manaus in the heart of the Amazon, to the final rounds in Rio de Janeiro. However, amid the chaos, crowds and premium pricing that are expected, there are some bright spots.

One Successful Airport Upgrade

Upgrading Brazil's outdated airports has been a national priority, but efforts to date are generally behind schedule. Many key terminals, such as Belo Horizonte's Tancredo Neves/Confins International, resemble a construction site more than a functional air terminal.

In São Paulo, however, there's good news. The city's much criticized international airport, Guarulhos, has successfully completed construction of Terminal 3, a state-of-the-art facility that will allow the airport to serve an additional 12 million passengers annually. The new facility, which dwarfs the airport's three older terminals, features the latest technology and enhanced passenger services, including a shopping mall. The total price tag for all of Guarulhos' planned upgrades is close to US$ 800 million.

Making Limonada from Lemons

Although many foreign business executives will avoid travel to Brazil during the Copa, Reuters reports that Apex, the country's national export agency, is using the promise of VIP treatment to attract 2,000 or more representatives of overseas firms to the country during the games. Those who participate will be treated to luxury suite seating at games and other perks. Apex is banking on inking deals that could add up to as much as $3 billion in new contracts for exports.

Many Brazilians, meanwhile, will opt to stay as far away from Copa activities as possible. Retired petrochemical engineer Claudio Olivera, a resident of São Paulo, expects to see the negative effects of the games influence daily life in his already hectic city. "There's no way I would consider attending a game," he told LBT. "I'll be lying low and watching it on TV!"
