Frequent Traveler: Moving from mines to government offices

An international mining engineer shares her tips for everything from packing to the value of administrative assistants to the best U.S. airports to connect through.

By Mark Holston

Lisa Wade

Lisa Wade is an environmental engineer with Goldcorp Inc., an international mining firm with corporate headquarters in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. Although she is based in the U.S. west in the state of Montana, Wade's work in support of environmental programs at all of the company's mining operations frequently takes her to projects in Latin America. After nearly two decades in the mining industry, she's a veteran of business trips that mix time in the field and meetings with government officials.

Any little-known secrets for a successful business trip?

I find it very helpful to check in with the administrative assistants of our local business contacts. They always know if I can find a restaurant within walking distance or not, and if there's a pharmacy close by for my forgotten toothbrush. They even know where to send me to get the national soccer team's jersey for my husband!

What are some essential points you've learned about business etiquette?

The overriding characteristic of Latin Americans, I think, is to be polite. It's possible that I've worked with men who thought I should not be in the role that I was, but they never expressed it if they did. I believe they are simply too polite to do this. And, I know this may surprise people, but I have never been a victim of a macho attitude by anyone in Latin America.

As for my own attitude and behavior, I believe that it's important to be very polite and listen to people. We gringos have a tendency to be more aggressive at work, and as a result we do not always listen well to our Latin colleagues. It's also tempting to ignore someone when you can't understand them, their language or their culture. It's really important that we listen well and go the extra mile to understand what people are telling us in their home country. Chances are high that they know better what should be done and how it should be done. If I am polite, listen well, and conduct myself as a professional, I can have great success working in Latin America.

What are your apparel and packing tips?

As a woman, this can be really complicated, as my trips often involve time in the field at a mine in rugged terrain or poor climate, followed by business meetings with government authorities. One rule that has served me well is to pack just one color scheme of clothes, typically blacks or browns. This can be a little boring, but it saves a lot of thought and luggage space for shoes and accessories. Also, I never check luggage because by the time lost luggage catches up to me at a remote site, I am already back home! It only took a couple of these luggage disasters to ensure that I would never check luggage on a business trip again. [And] my iPad is something I can't travel without.

When you take to the air, which airports are your ticket?

I try to avoid flying through LAX [Los Angeles International] if possible. The people that work there all seem to be very unhappy and not open to being asked questions by travelers. I always end up having to go in and out of security if I have a layover there, no matter how hard I try to get to my next flight without leaving any secured areas. I prefer departing the U.S. out of Atlanta, Houston or Dallas. Those airports are easy to navigate through and I can usually find something to do with myself while I'm there.

Is there an airline that you find particularly enjoyable?

Whenever I fly LAN, the staff and flight attendants are always friendly and helpful to the passengers. This is really appreciated, as flying is stressful and most passengers don't quite have it together as much as the flight attendants wish we did. The LAN staff attitude is really refreshing.

Antigua, Guatemala

Wade's Getaway: Antigua, Guatemala

When she has the chance to take some leisure time during a business trip, one of Wade's favorite destinations is an ancient city in Central America.

I really like walking around Antigua, Guatemala. It's less than an hour's drive from Guatemala City and it's a gorgeous setting. I like exploring the city, looking at the volcanoes, shopping for local artisan work and finally ending up sipping coffee somewhere.

There are some great candy shops if you want to try some local sweets, or just bring them back for someone as an interesting gift. And, I bought a beautiful jade necklace for my grandmother while I was there. I'm not a golfer, but friends tell me there's also a fabulous golf course there.
