Mexico City Meetings

Options for groups from convention-sized to intimate

By Mark Chesnut

As the largest city in North America and one of the three largest cities in the world, Mexico City is logically a popular place to conduct business. In recent years, the range of venues for meetings, both large and small, has grown considerably. It has some 117 business-friendly hotels and nearly 20,000 hotel rooms, as well as multiple convention centers, restaurants and cultural facilities that can host anything from a quiet business dinner to a gala business event.

Large Conventions

One of the largest recent expansions in meeting space occurred at Pepsi Center WTC, which is part of the World Trade Center in the city's Benito Juárez district. In 2012, the facility added a second theater, the 3,000-seat Centro Pepsi, which hosts public events and can also be used by private corporate groups. Pepsi Center also has five meeting rooms and expansive spaces for expos.

Additional large convention facilities are found at Centro Banamex, which can accommodate up to 10,000 people, and is part of the city's Las Americas Complex (which includes the Las Americas racetrack and a theme park). In the city's fast-growing Santa Fe business district, Expo Bancomer Santa Fe can host 2,000 people. And on Paseo de la Reforma, the Sheraton María Isabel, with its 75,000 square feet of space, can accommodate up to 1,500 people.

Santa Fe Meeting Hotspots

Santa Fe is one of Mexico City's hot spots for doing business, thanks to its growing infrastructure of office buildings, meeting space, hotels and upscale dining. One of the newest hotels to debut here is the Hilton Santa Fe Mexico City, which opened early this year with more than 8,000 square feet of meeting space. Also relatively new on the scene is the JW Marriott Mexico City Santa Fe, which has more than 11,000 square feet of meeting space.

Intimate Options

For more intimate spaces, business travelers often choose the city's award-winning restaurants - including Biko and Pujol, both of which are located in the Polanco district and were recently chosen as two of the top 10 best restaurants in Latin America by The Daily Meal. Both restaurants can hosts groups at tables within the main restaurant. Pujol has a private, 12-person dining room with varied menus. For corporate groups looking for a bit more privacy and room, Biko offers its intimate Casa Biko space, which can accommodate dinners of up to 50 people and cocktail parties for up to 80.

Cultural Venues

Mexico City meetings and corporate gatherings are also often hosted in cultural venues, including several large museums that dot the city's landscape. Among the newest is the 43,055-square-foot Museo Jumex, a museum funded largely by beverage giant Grupo Jumex. It has been open since late last year. Nearby is the attention-getting Soumaya Museum, founded by businessman Carlos Slim, which houses some 66,000 pieces of art in a futuristic building that opened in 2011.
