Historic Cuenca Welcomes Modern Initiatives

Mass transit, better accommodations coming to Ecuador's third-largest city

Cuenca, Ecuador

By Mark Chesnut

In the early 20th century, according to local legend, an economic boom partly based on the popularity of paja toquilla hats - often inaccurately called Panama hats, since they were shipped via that Central American port - brought new wealth to Cuenca, Ecuador's third-largest city.

Local families spent some of their riches to travel to Europe, picking up new styles and trends that would become visible not only in the clothing worn by the city's upper-class residents, but also in the architecture that lined the streets.

Today, European style is arriving yet again in this historic city, the center of which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. But this time, the trans-Atlantic arrival is in the form of mass transportation. The government has contracted the French company Artelia-Coteba to build a $230 million light-rail system that will have 27 stations, plus a line that may prove popular with business travelers, since it will connect the airport with the city center. Construction on the first line is set to begin by the end of this year, with a scheduled completion date sometime next year.

Fresh Accommodation Options Coming

Fresh style is also arriving in the form of accommodations. The 45-room Hotel Zahir 360, a boutique-style property slated to debut in early 2014, will feature a restaurant and meeting space. Local tourism officials are also talking about what they claim will be the city's first internationally branded luxury hotel - possibly a Starwood property, they say - which will have about 100 rooms, a spa, gym and restaurant.

The Hotel Oro Verde, one of the city's existing business-oriented hotels, has already finished renovations on its guest rooms, and now plans upgrades to its the lobby and other public areas.

More Meeting Spaces

Visiting corporate groups can make use of a variety of meeting venues. The largest meeting space is at Mall Del Río, which accommodates up to 4,000 participants. In addition, venues including the Museo de Arte Moderno (Modern Art Museum), Museo Pumapungo (a cultural history museum) and the historic old cathedral (which now houses a museum) are also available for private corporate meetings and events.

Leisure Options Set for Improvements

The city's public spaces are set for improvements during the next couple of years. The Estadio Alejandro Serrano Aguiler, the city's largest stadium, will be expanded and renovated in stages, beginning next year, with a jump in capacity from 22,000 to 30,000 spectators. The brand-new Planetario Municipal Ciudad de Cuenca, located in a city park called Parque de la Madre, will also provide new leisure-time diversions as well as event space for private functions.

Streets of Cuenca

These developments bode well for the city's growing business community, according to local tourism officials and observers. Manufacturing and education are among the fastest-growing segments in Cuenca, according to Andres Ochoa Alban, project coordinator for the city's Municipal Tourism Foundation; also in growth mode are the agriculture segment, agro-related industries, construction and health tourism.

In spite of its small size (compared to Ecuador's larger cities of Guayaquil and Quito), Cuenca leads the nation in several industry segments, according to Ochoa. The city is home to some 70% of the nation's furniture manufacturing, as well as the nation's only tire factory (Continental Tire Andina). Other major employers include home appliance manufacturer Indurama and ceramic and porcelain floor tile producers Graiman Companía Ltda. and Centro Cerámico.

Ticketholders pay a small sign-up fee to register with Optiontown, and then offer a price they are willing to pay to either upgrade to Aeromexico's Clase Premier (including first class cabin seating, priority check-in, boarding and disembarking) or to select preferred seats in the AMPlus section of the economy cabin (the first three rows of seating, with greater recline and priority boarding and check-in). The traveler's card is charged for the offer price (called an option) at that time. Between four days and 96 hours prior to departure, Optiontown then notifies the passenger whether the upgrade or selection has been granted. If the option is not granted, it refunds the purchase price to the credit card.
