Frequent Traveler: Lydia Lopez

A business consultant on how to impress your host at a business meeting in a foreign country, tranquil hotels and more.

By Mark Holston

Lydia Lopez is a founding partner of Palmyra Consulting, a business strategy firm that promotes foreign investment in the Republic of Panama. A Mexican-American born and raised in Texas, she began her development career close to home before her life's journey took her around the U.S. West, to Puerto Rico and finally to Panama. When traveling, she always packs some fashionable wardrobe items and has learned that it's best not to rush the first meeting with a new client.

Lopez's current project portfolio includes luxury beachfront master planning and affordable housing developments, as well as a newly branded Panamanian coffee label, Zancona, which has partnered with the Cuna Yala indigenous community to use of its signature mola as a logo.

How do you plan for the perfect business meeting in a foreign country?

Recognize that that the first 30 minutes of a meeting will be a chance to get to know each other, so don't rush into business topics right away. Always try the local fare at business lunches, as it shows your associates that you appreciate their culture. It's very helpful to know enough Spanish or Portuguese to get by, but speak English if your counterpart insists. Finally, know something about Latin American geography.

Hostal Nicolas de Ovando

What's always in your suitcase?

Latin Americans dress to the nines no matter what the occasion! So, pack some smart clothes even for down time with your local business associates.

What kind of hotel guarantees sweet dreams?

I very much enjoy settling down for the night in the nostalgic "old world" charm of a historic district. The majestic Hostal Nicolas de Ovando in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, is an example. Its location in the colonial quarter, which dates back to the 1500s, ensures tranquility. In Panama City it's Las Clementinas, a luxury historic boutique hotel. The rooftop terrace boasts a fascinating panoramic view that stretches from the enchanting historic district to the bustling "new world" metropolis that's the city center.

La Mar

What kind of food really satisfies your taste buds?

Mexican food warms my soul with the exotic combinations of flavors, but it's best enjoyed in Mexico or at home. I dream about Peruvian cuisine! In Lima, Astrid y Gastón and La Mar offer fantastic fare. In Panama, the best Peruvian food is to be found at Segundo Muelle, which offers great service and ambiance.

How do you like to get away from the business scene and truly experience a new locale?

I'll drive into the countryside, where you might see a local farming family harvesting their crop or discover a family home that doubles as the community store. That's where I like to stop for a visit, some smiles and an understanding of the true lay of the land.

Decorating for the Traveler

I like to decorate my home with things I've found on my travels, and I like artsy, fun, practical gifts. For instance, at Weil Art Gallery in Panama you can find lovely key chains made with local tagua nut that have been beautifully painted and presented on an industrial wire and clasp. From Mexico, I like the three-dimensional tin carvings of the Santa Iglesia Catedral De Queretaro. Things like that become sentimental conversation pieces.
