Why Should You Attend?
  • African Americans are disproportionately impacted by the HIV/AIDS epidemic more than any other racial or ethnic group in the United States.
  • 1.2 Million people in the United States are living with HIV
  • 1 in 5 do not know it because they have never been tested.
  • Every 9� minutes, someone in the United States is infected with HIV.
  • According to a 2009 research entitled "HIV Surveillance Report" published by the Center for Disease Control 1 in 32 Black women and 1 in 16 Black men will be diagnosed with having HIV during their lifetime.
  • African Americans represent 12-13% of the population but account for nearly 50% of the new HIV infections in the United States.
  • Black women represent over 50% of new infections
  • June 5, 2011 marked the 30th anniversary of the first diagnosed case of AIDS, in the United States, which was reported to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) June 1981.
Why Should Youth Attend?
  • 76,400 Youth (13-24) are estimated to be living with HIV in the United States
  • An estimated 1000 youth (13-24) are infected every month
  • About 60% of all youth, with HIV do not know they are infected, are not getting treated, and can unknowingly pass the virus on to others.
  • Young Black MSM ( Men who have sex with Men) ages 13-29 represent 52% of new HIV infections in the United States.
  • April 10th the United States observed the first annual National Youth HIV/AIDS Awareness Day.
