Mt Zion Progressive Church Anniversary
"Celebrating the Past and Cultivating the Future"
Mission: Impact the world by equipping believers to reach the lost with the Gospel of Jesus Christ.
Vision: To bring about an effective change within the two-mile radius of the church.
Her children rise up and call her blessed; Her husband also, and he praises her,   "Many daughters have done well, But you excel them all." Charm is deceitful and beauty is passing, But a woman who fears the Lord, she shall be praised.  Proverbs 31: 28-30

Greetings in the name of our Lord and Savior, Jesus, The Christ!

Rev. Louis M. Murphy, Sr.

We are almost halfway through 2013 and so much has happened in such a short time-span.  There have been highs and lows, gains and loss, but through it all God has been faithful in His promises.

Our 85th Church Anniversary celebration is well underway.  The Oral History Dinner in January provided a blueprint of the legacy of Mt. Zion and paved the path for our future.  In March we had our first month-long church beautification event that coincided with the annual church clean-up day.  It was a joy to see so many of you come out and take pride in the upkeep of the various facilities.  On April 27th the ladies of the church (and some men) Dressed to a Tea for a traditional tea party.  Church members and friends celebrated at the St. Petersburg Country Club promoting unity and fellowship.  Continue Reading

"Celebrating the Past and Cultivating the Future"

By Dr. Sharon Williams

The 85th Anniversary took off with a blast. Wednesday, February 27th, 2013, the Oral History Program ushered in the 85th Anniversary. Bustling with energy, several present and past members, friends, and neighbors from the community filled the second floor of Mt. Zion.  They were surrounded by artifacts from the past and greeted by nostalgic moments from friendly faces.

Over 85 years of history were told through oral anecdotes, illustrated with pictorial vignettes, and shared with present and past members and friends -- reminiscing about the past while celebrating the present and focusing on the future.

The guest panelist members -- Jackie McCree Davis, Dexter McCree, Brenda Garrett, Dr. Linda Hogans, and George Smith-- told stories about the growth of Mt. Zion. They reflected on its dedicated leaders and members, active-ministries, outreach programs, the day care center, the elementary school, the social service arm, and more.  Continue Reading

One More Chance!

by Tracy L. Darity

Many times we hear the saying, "No one says when I grow up I'm going to become a drug addict."  But too often that is a reality that some face.  That is the reality that Sister Sherry Brown faced for almost 24 years of her life.  Her story is common among many addicts who become addicted in their teens.  Peer pressure, a traumatic life experience, and little faith that there is something better waiting on the horizon.  Continue Reading

A Worker for the Vineyard
by Tracy L. Darity

Sister Edna Matt and I formally met about 4 years ago.  She had come to Lake Vista Park to walk and clear her head, thoughts of her late husband were weighing on her heavily.  The person I was walking with greeted her with open arms and invited her to walk with us.  At the time we were on our last lap but decided to walk one more with her.  Some 30 minutes later she had both poured out her feelings of loss and loneliness and ministered in prayer to us.  That's just the type of person she was, selfless and always wanting to do God's will.

She was a member of Mt. Zion for over 50 years, serving in several capacities, most recent as Director of the Family Touch Team Ministry (her baby), a Sunday School teacher and with Benevolence.  Little did I know

Saying So-long

Earlier this year Family Touch Team Zone 4 said good-bye to the dynamic duo, Cornelius and Apollo Williams.  The couple relocated to North Carolina to pursue other opportunities, and Zone 4 sent them off in style with a farewell reception where they were given a plaque recognizing their commitment to Mt. Zion.

The Williams's will always consider Mt. Zion their family and have asked that we stay in touch.  If you want to call and say hi the number is 614-562-9731.
