Good afternoon,
We hope you're enjoying the fall season and the cold that is coming with it! It is also election season and while we are very deliberately non-partisan, we do feel an obligation to speak out about the future of our region.
In many of our communities there are ballot items related to investments in infrastructure and zoning in areas planned for growth. When we developed our Regional ECOS Plan, it became very clear how important it is for our future sustainability to invest and increase density in these areas. There are ballot items in many of our municipalities that support smart growth development. These include: items 1, 2, 3, & 4 in Burlington, the South Burlington TIF, Hinesburg's solar tracker bond, Champlain Water District bonds, and Shelburne water lines -- and they all support the ECOS Plan areas planned for growth.
Making investments and increasing density in these areas helps our region become more sustainable in the following ways:
- Maintaining our infrastructure in good repair;
- Supporting development and its additional property tax revenue to make municipal budgets more sustainable;
- Supporting affordable housing, which will help keep a qualified and talented workforce in our community;
- Supporting retail and commercial space that will attract business and grow jobs;
- Reducing sprawl and concentrating economic revitalization;
- Concentrating development to support reduced driving distances, increased transit use, and provide more opportunities for biking and walking; and,
- In Burlington, the TIF will re-open Pine and St. Paul Streets and support the redevelopment of the Burlington Town Center right next to the new transit station increasing transportation choices for all.
I urge you to consider these benefits and share your voice in our future when you go to the polls on November 8th.
Best regards,
Charlie Baker Executive Director |
