United Way Volunteer Opportunities: Summer 2016

Looking for ways to volunteer this summer? Check out short-term and special event volunteer opportunities with the United Way for the coming months.

Volunteer with Neighbor Rides

Neighbor Rides is a strategic initiative of United Way of Chittenden County supported by a dynamic group of community partners that brings people and places together to help meet the transportation needs of seniors and persons with disabilities. This partnership uses volunteer drivers to leverage government and community-funded transportation programs and help more people by decreasing the cost per ride.

As a continuation of our 50th anniversary celebration throughout the year, we've chronicled some milestones of the last half-century in a graphic timeline. This timeline highlights some significant benchmarks, events, and other happenings in Chittenden County and beyond over the last 50 years. We hope you enjoy the journey back in time!

The celebration continues next month at our 50th Annual Meeting and Celebration on June 15th from 5:45-7:45pm at Champlain College. This special evening of sharing with representatives of municipal, regional, and state government will look back at the Regional Planning Commission's past 50 years of service to the municipalities of Chittenden County. Governor Peter Shumlin will be our guest speaker. If you'd like to attend, please contact Emma Vaughn.

Best regards,

Charlie Baker
Executive Director

Board Member Spotlights
In celebration of our 50th anniversary year, we will be featuring a few CCRPC Commissioners in each newsletter to get a behind-the-scenes look at who they are and how they contribute to our communities.
Jim Donovan, CCRPC Charlotte Representative (2009-Present)
Jim is a landscape architect and planner working for himself at Broadreach Planning & Design, focusing on bicycling and walking transportation projects. In his community and beyond, Jim takes on many roles: He was a member of the Charlotte Planning Commission for 12 years; is the President-Elect of the Vermont Chapter of the American Society of Landscape Architects; and serves as Treasurer of the Northern New England Chapter of the American Planning Association. He's also a member of the Scientific Committee on International Cultural Tourism that is part of the larger International Committee on Sites and Monuments, one of two advisors to UNESCO on World Heritage Sites. This membership has provided Jim the opportunity to do volunteer planning work around the world relating to bicycling and walking. Recent trips allowed him to work with professional colleagues from around the world and locals from the host site on rewarding projects in Thailand, the Philippines, the Seychelles Islands, and southern France. Jim loves Vermont and Chittenden County in particular, and feels that he gets so much from his community that he wants to give something back; using his professional skills to help make our part of the State a little better is one way he can do this. One of the reasons Jim decided to be a landscape architect was a love of plants and gardening. Jim and his wife, also a landscape architect, have a BIG garden including flowers, vegetables, and fruit trees, and they spend much of their free time looking after it. They both love to travel and typically take two or three trips a year to interesting places, most of the time associated with their volunteer or professional activities. They also spend as much time as possible with their granddaughter and her parents who all live in Buffalo, NY.
Lou Mossey, CCRPC Milton Representative (2005-Present)
Lou has been active in his community for most of the 33 years he's lived in Milton, taking on roles such as (but not limited to): Little League Coach and Umpire, Selectboard member and chair, Economic Development Committee member, and Enlisted Association of the National Guard of the United States. A member of the VT Air National guard for 42 years, full time for 38 years, Lou will retire in September 2016. Lou sees a relationship between community involvement as contributing to the CCRPC goals in the ECOS Plan; all of the CCRPC's planning efforts are to build strong communities. Lou's involvement in various organizations over the years helps build a strong community. After 10 years on the CCRPC, serving in many roles including Chair and Vice Chair, Lou plans to step down this June and take some time to see if there are any other ways he may want get involved. In his spare time, Lou likes to deer hunt in the fall, work on the family vehicles, help his family, and get involved with his grandchildren's activities.
John Zicconi, CCRPC Shelburne Representative (2012-Present)
John has been the Executive Secretary to the Vermont Transportation Board since March 2012. Prior to that, he worked with both the Tropical Storm Irene Command Centers as well as the Irene Recovery Office under Governor Shumlin, and was the Director of Planning, Outreach and Community Affairs for VTrans under Governor Douglas. All of these positions provided John a unique understanding of transportation and land-use issues, which are at the heart of what the CCRPC does. People waste way too much time sitting in traffic, while pedestrians and bicyclists risk their lives too often attempting to navigate roadways ill designed to protect them. Quality of life can be significantly improved through better traffic management and improved transportation infrastructure. John believes it is important to plan for a better future, of which improved transportation must play an important part. John in an avid live music fan who loves to travel, and describes himself as more of a beach comer than a mountain man. His playpens include jazz festivals, Caribbean islands and European cities; he can spend all day in the Louvre, the Riksmuseum, the Tate and the Uffizi, but only when not reading a crime novel while lounging under a palapa with waves breaking at his toes. At night, he maintains there is nothing like a trendy jazz club and a cold pint of craft beer.
