United Way Volunteer Opportunities

Looking for ways to volunteer this summer? If you want to donate your time or talent, need resources or help for you or someone in your family, or want to donate household or office items you no longer need, United Way of Chittenden County can help.

Make a Positive Impact on the Lives of Your Neighbors!

Neighbor Rides is seeking volunteer drivers to use their personal vehicle to help elders and persons with disabilities get to medical appointments, grocery stores, pharmacies and other errands. Volunteer drivers have the chance to make a tangible impact on the lives of their neighbors by heloing them get to life-sustaining and life-enriching activities. Flexible schedules and mileage reimbursement are available; background checks required.

As temperatures rise and we find ourselves lowering the thermostat, dusting off the A/C unit for installation and plugging in fans, peak energy times are being highlighted across the media, encouraging consumers to unplug during the busiest hours to help conserve. With energy consumption on our minds, we'd like to highlight an opportunity (ending next week) to provide input on energy use in Vermont.

The Vermont Comprehensive Energy Plan (CEP) is prepared by the Public Service Department (PSD) to address Vermont's energy future for electricity, heating, industrial processing, transportation, and land use. The PSD is seeking public input to help guide an update to the 2011 Plan, with a draft expected late this summer. In order for the draft to reflect current understanding of Vermont's energy challenges, opportunities, and direction, input from the public, experts, and stakeholders is encouraged by next Friday, July 24.

The 2011 CEP recommended that Vermont set a path to obtain 90% of our total energy from renewable sources by 2050. In addition to feedback on renewable energy generation, the PSD is looking for comments on how to get more efficient, reduce transportation energy consumption, and any financial systems that should be developed or improved to achieve these objectives.

Please take a moment to provide your input on this and all sectors to help shape the future of energy in our state.

Best regards,

Charlie Baker
Executive Director
