Vermont Sends the Most People to Peace Corps Per Capita

Via The Washington Post -- For a state with such a small population, Vermont churns out a lot of Peace Corps volunteers.

In an article published in December by The Washington Post, Vermont was listed as having the most per capita volunteers in the global volunteer program started 53 years ago by President John F. Kennedy. Vermont has 7.8 volunteers per 100,000 residents in Peace Corps as of Sept. 30, 2014.

Burlington Named one of MSN Money's "15 Hottest Cities for 2015"

Via MSN Money - We've found the 15 hottest US cities for 2015, all of which will be booming next year thanks to new jobs, growing industries, burgeoning art and food scenes, and affordable real estate.

To compile this list, we looked at job growth, population growth, affordability, livability, and the health and well-being of the residents. We also considered how innovative and "cool" the city is -- an important factor in attracting young, creative types.

With the start of the 2015 legislative session, high priority topics for the year ahead have been prominent in discussions at the local, regional and state levels.

Last month, the CCRPC hosted its first Chittenden County Municipal Legislative Breakfast. A mix of 65 State Representatives, Senators, municipal elected officials, municipal managers/administrators, CCRPC Board members and more convened to discuss high priority topics for the 2015 legislative session. The surveys we collected after the event yielded very positive feedback, and 100% of them indicated participants' interest in attending a similar event in the future. We plan to host this again next year.

High priority items discussed by Chittenden County legislators and municipal officials in attendance included:

Jobs and Economy
- Invest in improving a strategically coordinated system of workforce development to address the needs of our growing employers, particularly in the areas of advanced manufacturing and information technology.
- Support and incent investments in research and development that drive product development, job retention and job creation.
Smart Growth
- Prioritize investments in areas planned for growth, especially transportation projects including the CIRC alternatives and other programmed projects.
- Look for ways to make the permitting system (State agencies, Act 250, and municipal) more efficient and effective for development in areas planned for growth.
State and Municipal Budgets
- Evaluate and develop improvements to the education property tax system to reduce high annual increases in the face of declining enrollment.
- Evaluate and develop methods to pay for or revise health care reforms to reduce high annual increases for health insurance.
Water Quality

- Enact effective legislation and funding to implement the TMDL Plan to clean up Lake Champlain and all waters in the State.

Find more information on the above topics, as well as CCRPC recommendations on permit system improvement and water quality, at: http://www.ccrpcvt.org/aboutus/policies.

As the 2015 session progresses, we look forward to working together with our ECOS partners to assist the legislators with their challenging work ahead.

Best regards,

Charlie Baker, Executive Director
Chittenden County RPC
