VoiceFlame Endorses
Memoir
From the CEO, Mary Tuchscherer
On behalf of everyone at VoiceFlame, it is my honor to congratulate our dear friend and colleague, Susen Hickman on the launch of her new memoir, Be Happy:Life After Loss.
The first time Susen shared with me that she was writing a book she said her intention was to tell her story in a manner that people could relate to and benefit from. She has accomplished that and so much more.
Whenever I visit Susen in her lovely Lafayette home, the first words I hear are always, "Sitte ned noen," a Norwegian phrase passed on by her mother that loosely means 'sit a while.' She motions for me to settle into the comfy wing-backed chair by the fireplace and instantly, I feel welcomed and warmed by her presence.
I dare say that when you read Susen's memoir that same feeling of comfort and receptivity will wash over you. Susen opens her heart and invites the reader into her intimate experience of grief without ever abandoning her humility or wavering from her truth. From beginning to end it will feel as if you are the one being held in the care of a steadfast and compassionate woman who understands what it means to be human in the face of loss.
The poem below, Liwonde Night was inspired by an evening safari in Malawi and is included in her memoir, along with other grace-filled poems.
Liwonde Night
The guide cut the engine of the
safari jeep and the sounds
of the Malawi wilderness
crashed upon my ears.
With eyes shut I tried to record
the sounds as to never forget
the symphony that stirred me
into a kind of rapture.
A hundred, no a thousand
clicking crickets, frogs croaking
and buzzing-from what creature?
joining the chorus
Memory is not capable of exact
recollection which makes me sad,
for it was all for that moment,
that one unforgettable night of music.
