Principal's Corner |
Families,
Now that spring is here, we are beginning our KVP Butterfly Garden project. In preparation for the garden, we need some handy volunteers to assemble the benches that will be outside. These are benches that can be converted into tables. You will be working in pairs to build a bench. Directions and tools are provided, but you would need to assemble the benches per the instructions. You will most likely be using a drill, screwdriver, and a wrench. I anticipate the project taking approximately 1-2 hours to complete. The first 12 people to RSVP their interest will be considered. I will be offering 3 stamps for a completed bench (maximum 3 stamps per person).
- Please RSVP to mferguson@kippvisionprimary directly.
- Put "Building Garden Benches" in the subject line.
- In the body of the email include
- Name
- Scholar's name
- Daytime availability (day of the week and times)
- Contact phone number
Once she has received enough RSVPs, I will post that the volunteer period is over.
Dr. Wheda A. Carletos, Ph.D.

Visionary of the Week
|
Due to our spring break and the additional Monday off for scholars, our next group of Visionaries will be celebrated at our Visionary lunch on Monday, April 18. Though this will be the last Visionary status to count toward the end of the year trip, we will continue to celebrate Visionaries at our lunch table until May 9.

Afternoon Bus Parking | In order to ensure that buses are able to park safely, their afternoon parking location will change. Effective April 12, 2016, buses will park in the front driveway for afternoon dismissal. Parents and visitors will no longer be allowed to park in the front driveway. We are also asking parents not to park in the public park area for afternoon dismissal. Instead, please use the small KVP parking lot or large KVC carpool parking lot.
Below are updates to our afternoon bus dismissal process.
- Dismissal starts at 3:55pm for bus riders.
- Group A buses (144, 141, 146 and 147) pull into the front driveway and students will board the buses there. At 4:05pm, group A buses will pull out.
- Group B buses pull in to the front driveway from their parked positions at the park (142, 143, 145 and 148). At 4:05pm, those students are brought out and that group of buses departs at 4:15pm.
- Time changes for parents will be minimal and will still be within the 10 minute window of the original stop times that parents were given.
- Text messages will still be sent notifying parents when buses leave the school. If you do not receive the bus text messages, text the code @kvcb to the number 810-10. You will receive a response asking for you to reply with your name and then you will be added to the list.

Ten Staycation Ideas for the Spring and Summer
- Backyard Camping: Set up tents in the backyard and have a backyard camping trip! Pack up your sleeping bags, fire up the grill, and grab a couple of flashlights and lawn chairs.
- Video Game Olympics: If you plan out your video game Olympics in advance, you can set up tournaments and give out prizes or trophies to the top three finishers in each category.
- A Day at the Movies: Set up a red carpet in the TV room (you can use a red vinyl tablecloth). Hang up stills of classic movies and actors. Dress up as your favorite movie star or character and take "red carpet" photos of each other. To kick off the movie, toast each other with sparkling juice or cider. Settle in with lots of pillows and comfy seating. And don't forget the popcorn.
- Organize a Scavenger Hunt: Use your computer to print out clues, maps and goodies, and hide them places. The clues can be straightforward or written as puzzles or poems. A scavenger hunt is actually a great teaching tool for children because clues can contain simple math problems or local history questions. Leave little prizes along the way (candy, small toys) with one big prize for the eventual winner(s).
- Family Feast Night: Here's how you do it: Sit down as a family and vote on a special ingredient. Then, everyone has to plan a dish that features that ingredient.
- Spring Cleanout Challenge: This time of year is a great time to do some spring cleaning. Set up a family "Spring Cleanout Challenge." Give each person a goal -- perhaps you need your tween to get rid of the old toys he or she doesn't play with anymore.
- Gardening Day: Spring is also a wonderful time to get started with your garden. If you're lucky enough to have a backyard where you can plant a big garden, get the soil ready in advance. If you live in an apartment or don't have a big yard, plan a "container garden" where you can plant smaller things like herbs, cherry tomatoes or peppers.
- Get a Hotel Room in Town: Pack up the family and check into a local hotel for the weekend. Many hotels now offer "staycation specials," so make sure you ask.
- Go on Home Safari: Turn your home and backyard into an African safari. Treat the kids to a viewing of "The Lion King" beforehand to get them in the mood. Next, decorate the house. Make paper bag vines from old brown paper grocery bags by cutting the bags into strips of three, then twisting them together to look like vines. Hang them throughout the house with green paper leaves attached.
- Act like a Tourist: Whether you live in a big city or a small burg, every town has a department of tourism. Send away for a pamphlet about tourist attractions in your area. Sit down with the family and choose the spots you all want to visit.
