Principal's Corner
Family,

Just when you thought that we couldn't get any better, please allow me to introduce you to one of the newest members of the KIPP Vision Primary School Dream Team. Please welcome Ms. Kalin Jarvis.

Ms. Jarvis received her undergraduate degree in English with a minor in Chemistry from Winston-Salem State University in 2012.  As a former student athlete, she is a believer of the team player concept and looks forward to becoming a part of the Dream Team for the 2016-2017 school year.  She comes from a family that is rich in educators and is dedicated to continuing this legacy.  Kalin is committed to providing learners with a healthy environment where they are able to display individuality.  The following quote by Maya Angelou about life represents Kalin's approach to teaching: "My mission in life is not merely to survive, but to thrive; and to do so with some passion, some compassion, some humor, and some style."

The journey continues,

Dr. Wheda A. Carletos, Ph.D.

Save the Date - Dining with Dad, Thursday, March 24
KVP dads, join us for our second annual "Dining with Dad" event. This is your chance to share a meal and some special time with your KVP scholar during the school day. A scholar may host one male guest at this special event. (e.g Fathers, granddads, uncles, brothers over 21, or any significant male in the scholar's life.)

So that the cafeteria manager is able to prepare enough food for you and your scholar, you must RSVP online by Tuesday, March 15.

By the way moms, the KVP women are letting the guys have this event to themselves. However, we do need your help getting the word out and making sure those RSVP's get submitted on time.

For your planning purposes, the lunch times are as follows:

Kindergarten, 10:20 - 10:55
1st Grade, 10:55 - 11:20
2nd Grade, 11:20 - 11:45

First Student Bus Alert System
Dear Parents of KIPP Metro Atlanta Bus Riders,

Keeping parents informed and involved helps to ensure student safety and improve student success.  With today's on-the-go lifestyles, it has become more difficult to reach families quickly and effectively.  This is why First Student has teamed up with Honeywell Instant Alert to implement a new alert program.

Instant Alert for Schools is an essential tool for notification and communication.  Within minutes of a bus delay or cancelation, First Student can use the Instant Alert to deliver a single, clear message to the students' parents or guardians by telephone, cell phone, email and/or in any combination.
Instant Alert is internet based, allowing each family to maintain a secure password protected online profile. Maintaining the accuracy of your profile will increase the ability to keep you informed with bus delays and changes.
Your online profile will enable you to:
  • Input your personal contact information
  • Select which type of bus information you would like to receive on each of you contact devices
  • Set the days and time of day you would like to your phone device to receive alerts
  • View the alerts that have been sent to you in the past
The system will be ready for you to use at http://instantalert.honeywell.comon Monday February 8, 2016.  We encourage you to take advantage of this opportunity, as we will be utilizing this system for our bus communications.

As an initial test, First Student sent out a test message on Thursday, February 4, 2016.  If you did not receive a test message, please contact First Student at 404-733-1342 to verify your information in our Honeywell system.

Again, we are very excited about our partnership with Honeywell to be able to provide KIPP families with bus communications to keep your families notified and safe.

Thanks,

Ryan Elcombe
First Student Location Manager

General Tips for Parents on Teaching Patience to Children

Teach by modeling. Refrain from snapping impatiently at your children. Use "no-shaming" techniques to help your child understand that she or he may need to wait or take some time before a need is addressed or request is fulfilled.

Take time to look at the child and listen carefully when she is talking to you. Giving your attention even when you are distracted or busy shows the quality of patience more clearly than words can explain it.

When the kids are demanding you to do something right away refrain from yelling at them to "stop," or "be quiet," (or worse.) Instead, explain to the children the reasons you may not be able to fulfill their requests immediately. Match your explanations to the child's age and level of maturity. Offer the child something to do in the interim, and be sure to return to tending to the child's request when you say you will. Having your attention at the end of a period when the child must be patient will be rewarding and tend to reinforce the patient behavior.

Work with your kids to resolve problems when they are frustrated with trying to deal with something. Help to trouble shoot and think things through together. This will demonstrate patience by example. If you both get frustrated, suggest taking a breather, when you both get away from the problem for a few minutes. Then come back together to deal with it.

Practice relaxation techniques that prepare you for patience when your children are trying yours. Teach relaxation skills to the children. Little kids love to daydream. You can try a few minutes of quiet time with them to train them to use this as a patience technique.
