Principal's Corner |
Families,
One of our values is HONOR - honoring who you are and honoring the differences in others. At KIPP Vision Primary, we recognize that as our scholars grow, they will begin to notice a particular characteristic that makes them unique. We believe that our scholars are born into a rich legacy filled with historical contributions. This month and beyond, I encourage you to spend time with your child celebrating the countless contributions of African Americans. Teaching children about the historical accomplishments and struggles of African Americans benefits everyone. By connecting children with history, they'll gain a better understanding of themselves no matter what color they are. Likewise, they'll learn to develop compassion for other people.
In the spirit of honoring African American pioneers and landmark events in black history, engage your children in activities that capture their senses. Whether it is reading books, listening to music or making soulful meals, there are plenty of fun ways for scholars to learn about the African American experience. Remember, your children can enjoy these activities long after February is over.
The journey continues,
Dr. Wheda A. Carletos, Ph.D.

Partnerships in Action |
KVP at the State Capitol
The scholars had a wonderful day of learning and joy as they participated in the annual rally for National School Choice Week at the State Capitol. They listened to guest speakers talk to them about the value of school choice, they danced to music (and boy did they dance) and enjoyed a Chick-fil-A lunch, all with the backdrop of the beautiful gold-domed Capitol building and the newly opened Liberty Plaza. Thank you to the parents who joined us for this special occasion.
Writing Portfolio Night
It was great to see so many of you at our Writing Portfolio Night on Thursday. We would like to thank our facilitators, Ms. Cherese Clark, Mrs. Kenya Hartry, Mrs. Nicole Irving, Ms. Lenecia Lattimore, Ms. Ulanda Wilson, Mrs. Tamarra Wood, Mrs. Carethea Wright for leading such engaging workshops. According to the surveys you completed, you found the sessions very helpful, and you would like to see more parent-led workshops. Stay tuned!
Save the Date, Wednesday, February 24, 5:30 - 7:00 PM, Math Literacy Night
Math Literacy Night will be another chance for you to learn academic strategies you can use at home with your scholar. This event will
feature interactive games for the entire family to enjoy.
End of the Year Trip Payments
Please review the informational flyer for your scholar's trip to ensure you are meeting the payment deadlines. For example, January 29 was the deadline to make the first payment of the payment plan for the second grade trip to Savannah. Excused Absences - Inclement Weather |
All absences from Friday, January 22, 2016 will be excused due to the inclement weather. As a reminder, please refer to KIPP Metro Atlanta's policy in our handbook regarding parental discretion during inclement weather.
Parental Discretion
In the event of delay or closure, KIPP Metro Atlanta Schools will make every effort to provide rigorous instruction and maintain as many regular school day activities as possible. We respect your right, as a parent, to keep your child at home if you believe that weather conditions are a risk to your child's safety. You must notify the school of your child's absence, and these absences or late arrivals may be excused.
KIPP Metro Atlanta will determine whether or not weather-related absences/tardies are excused within 48 hours of collecting the attendance data for the region.

IMPORTANT - Current Student Registration |
Registration for current students will begin on February 11, 2016 and end on February 29, 2016.
NEW THIS YEAR: For all KIPP Metro Atlanta Schools, the absolute last day to register current students for the upcoming 2016 - 2017 school year is February 29, 2016 at 11:59 p.m. If you do not click submit to complete registration by then and still want your student to attend for the upcoming school year, you will need to fill out an enrollment application on the KIPP Metro Atlanta website by March 15, 2016 at 5:00 p.m. and enter the lottery with all other prospective families. If you fill out the application after March 15, 2016 at 5:01 p.m., you will go to the end of the waiting list and will not have any enrollment preferences. NO EXCEPTIONS. Please make sure that you complete the application as soon as possible to allow time for any problems that may arise. Applications that are not in the submitted status by February 29, 2016 at 11:59 p.m. will be considered void.
The process for current student registration will be as follows:
- Check your email on February 11, 2016. You should have received an email with the subject line "KIPP Vision Campus - Current Student Registration is Now Open". (If you do not receive one by 10:00 a.m., email TKnox@kippvisionacademy.org)
- The email contains a unique snapcode link for each student for registration. Click on the link to begin the registration application. Please note that all registration information and documents should be submitted online through the registration application.
- If you are applying for bus transportation for the 2016 - 2017 school year, (morning, afternoon, or after care), you must complete the section of the application for bus transportation by the current student registration deadline. There is not a separate application this year. Failure to complete this section may result in your student not having bus transportation for the 2016 - 2017 school year.
- Once you have completed the information section of the registration application, you will be taken to the documents upload page where you will need to upload the required documents listed below.
- Documents must be scanned, saved and then, uploaded. If you do not have a scanner at home, below is the link to a video tutorial for a free scanning app on phones and tablets named Cam Scanner. If you do not wish to use this resource or one similar to it, you can go to the KVC Parent Center, Office Depot, Staples, FedEx Kinkos or some libraries. Click here to watch a tutorial on how to use Cam Scanner and how to upload documents.
- Required Documents
- Government issued ID for enrolling parent and all emergency contacts
- Updated Immunizations for 6th and 7th grade students ONLY (FYI for KVP families with scholars at one of our middle schools)
- Proof of Residency
- Deed/Mortgage Statement/Lease (mortgage statements and leases must be dated within 30 days of submission date)
- Affidavit of Residency. The Affidavit of Residency must be notarized. We have notaries available on-site that can notarize documents for $5.00. Any documents that are notarized on-site can be scanned and uploaded for you.
- Georgia Power Bill (must be dated within 30 days of submission date)
- Two - Three Supporting Documents for Residency Verification (water bill, cable bill, phone bill, insurance bill, etc. - must be dated within 30 days of submission date). If you own or rent your residence, you need two supporting documents. If you live with someone else and your name is not on the lease or mortgage, you need three supporting documents.
IMPORTANT: Do not submit your application until you have uploaded all required documents. Once you submit the application, you will not be allowed to resubmit or make any changes.
Once you click submit, we will be able to access your current student registration application and documents. You do NOT need to come to the school and bring your documents as the final step. We will review applications and documents online and contact you directly if there is an issue with any of your submissions. Otherwise, you will receive an email once your application has been approved and no further steps are required.

Counselor's & Social Worker's Corner | Using Empathy Effectively
To start using empathy more effectively, consider the following:
- Put aside your viewpoint, and try to see things from the other person's point of view. When you do this, you'll realize that other people most likely aren't being evil, unkind, stubborn, or unreasonable - they're probably just reacting to the situation with the knowledge they have.
- Validate the other person's perspective. Once you "see" why others believe what they believe, acknowledge it. Remember: acknowledgement does not always equal agreement. You can accept that people have different opinions from your own, and that they may have good reason to hold those opinions.
- Examine your attitude. Are you more concerned with getting your way, winning, or being right? Or, is your priority to find a solution, build relationships, and accept others? Without an open mind and attitude, you probably won't have enough room for empathy.
- Listen. Listen to the entire message that the other person is trying to communicate.
- Listen with your ears - what is being said, and what tone is being used?
- Listen with your eyes - what is the person doing with his or her body while speaking?
- Listen with your instincts - do you sense that the person is not communicating something important?
- Listen with your heart - what do you think the other person feels?
- Ask what the other person would do. When in doubt, ask the person to explain his or her position. This is probably the simplest, and most direct, way to understand the other person. However, it's probably the least used way to develop empathy.
It's fine if you ask what the other person wants: you don't earn any "bonus points" for figuring it out on your own.
Practice these skills when you interact with people. You'll likely appear much more caring and approachable - simply because you increase your interest in what others think, feel, and experience. It's a great gift to be willing and able to see the world from a variety of perspectives - and it's a gift that you can use all of the time, in any situation.
Here are some more tips for an empathic conversation:
- Pay attention, physically and mentally, to what's happening.
- Listen carefully, and note the key words and phrases that people use.
- Respond encouragingly to the central message.
- Be flexible - prepare to change direction as the other person's thoughts and feelings also change.
- Look for cues that you're on target.
