Principal's Corner
Families,

Where did the Executive Director of Ivy Prep and all of Ivy Prep's principals spend the entire day observing classes gathering best practices?  What school can boast of being asked for help with their curriculum by both Kindezi and Towns Elementary School?  What school has hosted schools from across the state who come in search of excellent instruction and a loving school culture?  What school you ask?  OUR SCHOOL.  That's right, KIPP VISION PRIMARY SCHOOL.  At KIPP Vision Primary School, we have set the bar for what excellence in education should and can look like and schools across the nation are taking notice. Yes, WE DID THAT!

Not only have other schools heard about the great work that we are doing, right now applications for the 2016-2017 school year are open and families are flooding the KIPP Metro Atlanta webpage in hopes of securing a spot at OUR SCHOOL.  In fact, since the application opened on January 1st, I have received 20+ emails from families all hoping to see their scholar's name on the list at the lottery.  Do you remember that feeling?  Do you remember the feeling of being nervous about your kindergarten scholar starting "big kid" school for the very first time?  If so, please share.  I'd love to hear from you.  Now that we are 1/3 of the way through the journey, I want to know from you, how has the journey been for you and your scholar?  What advice would you give to a new to KVP parent or to someone hoping to be a part of our family?  I want to know and if it's alright with you, I'd like to share your thoughts with perspective parents. Please email me your thoughts at wcarletos@kippvisionprimary.org.  I can't wait to read them.

The journey continues,

Dr. Wheda A. Carletos, Ph.D.

Partnerships in Action
Atlanta Food Bank Donation
Due to your generosity, we were able to donate close to 400 pounds of food to the Atlanta Community Food Bank right before the holidays. Your donations made it possible for the food bank to serve over 300 meals to those in need. Thank you for improving the lives of others, one meal at a time.

Noah's Ark Donation
Once again you showed your heart by sending in $1.00 donations to Noah's Ark, the animal sanctuary we visited in early December. Our donations totaled approximately $200.00, with the money you sent in before our trip and the dollars you sent with the scholars on the day of the trip. The scholars were so proud to know that their contributions were helping the animals live safer and healthier lives.

End of the Year Trips - May 2016
Kindergarten - " A Day in Atlanta"
First Grade - " A Night at the GA Aquarium"
Second Grade - "A Trip to Savannah"

Please be sure to read the informational flyers placed in your scholar's folder on Friday for all the trip details, including eligibility requirements and payment. The flyers have also been placed on the homeroom webpages for your convenience.

Journey Cards
Be sure to get your journey cards stamped each time you volunteer in the classroom, attend a meeting, attend a parent/teacher conference, or a school event, etc. Your scholars will need your points to be eligible to go on the end of the year trips. Don't have a Journey Card? Pick up one from your scholar's homeroom teacher and receive a stamp at that time! (Helpful hint: Many parents keep this card in their glove compartment, so if they forget it when they come into the building, they can always run back to the car.)

Enrollment for New Families

It's that time of year again!  Enrollment for the 2016 - 2017 school year officially began on January 1, 2016.  We are now accepting applications for new students in the following grades:

KIPP Vision Primary- Kindergarten - 3rd Grade
KIPP Vision Academy- 5th - 8th Grade

While families can submit applications for all students going to the grades above in the 16-17 school year, our recruiting focus is on
kindergarten and 5th grade.

We need your help in identifying rising kindergarten and 5th grade students to apply to KIPP Vision Campus. Here's how you can help:
  1. Click here to submit the contact information for families of three rising kindergarten or 5th grade students so that we can send them more information about applying.
  2. Once you submit the requested information for 3 rising kindergarten or 5th grade students, your name will be entered into a raffle for a $150.00 credit towards your scholars end of the year field trip fee If the fees for the trip are less than $150.00, you will receive the balance in the form of a gift card (there will be one winner per school).
  3. The deadline to submit names and contact information is January 20, 2016 at 11:59 p.m.

How do I set limits with my child?

Conscious Discipline advises to use the acronym, A.C.T., to set limits and communicate with your child.

- Acknowledge the child's feelings, wishes and wants.
C - Communicate the limit in terms of safety
- Target acceptable behavior

There are several basic steps that can be used in the limit-setting process. The key factors in limit-setting are the understanding of the child's intention and motivation. Limit-setting works better when the adult acknowledges the child's feelings, wishes and wants, communicates the limits clearly, and targets acceptable behavior.
