Weekly Bulletin

KIPPster Support Conferences DATE CHANGE
The dates for the KIPPster support conferences have changed to October 19th and 21st. If you signed up previously, your conference has been moved to the next Monday and Wednesday. Please check the link attached and if your new date/time does not work for you please contact your scholar's GLC to assist you. We are sorry for any inconvenience!

If you have NOT signed up, please sign up using the information below.

We cannot believe it is the end of the first quarter already! As we prepare for the second quarter, it is important that we take the time to review the last quarter and ensure that we are ready to end this semester in excellence.  Family-teacher conferences will be extended to all families, but are MANDATORY for all scholars that have failed two, or more classes in the first quarter. The conferences will be held October 19th and 21st between 4:20PM and 6:30PM.

Below you will find the link to schedule a conference with your scholar's grade level team. Please access the link below and under the <Table View> tab write your scholar's name in an open time slot. Each time has four openings so that you are able to pick a time that best works for you.

Quarter 1 Report Cards
Report card distribution began on October 16th. Report cards will be available in the main office anytime between the hours of 7:10 am and 4:00pm (3:00pm on Wednesday). If your child is failing two or more classes, it is mandatory to attend one of the conference times October 19th or 21st.

Funtumfunafu Induction Ceremony
Kiambote KIPP Team and Family!

On October 23, 2015, we are honored to induct the first class of Funtumfunafu Society Members (FSM) for the 2015- 2016 school year. There are three levels to FS this year and the criteria for each level will be evaluated on a quarterly basis. The first group of scholars met the criteria for Quarter 1 based on their grades and paycheck and behavioral records.
Click here for the criteria and help your scholar strive to be a Funtumfunafu Society Member as well as work toward reaching the Gold. The Quarter 1 Funtumfunafu Society cycle went from July 27th  to October 2nd  in order to align with our paycheck cycles and get the most accurate data possible.

In Partnership,
Ms. Davis

Annual Title I Meeting
Please join KVC (KIPP Vision Academy and KIPP Vision Primary) for our
Annual Title I Meeting. The meeting will be held on Wednesday, October 28, 2015 from 3:30 - 4:30 p.m.

During this meeting, we will discuss our school curriculum and academic
goals, our Title I school designation status, our parents' right to know,
and distribute our recently revised school/parent compact and parent
involvement policy.

Book Character Day
On Friday, October 30, KIPP Vision Academy is celebrating its love for books by encouraging staff and students to dress up like their favorite character from a book!  There's no need to buy a costume - here are some ideas:

  • Arthur - glasses, solid-colored polo shirt, and jeans
  • Harry Potter - school uniform, glasses, cape (made from a towel)
  • Fancy Nancy - costume jewelry, feather boa, hair bow, anything glittery or sparkly
  • Opal, from Because of Winn-Dixie  - ponytail, solid-colored t-shirt, jeans
There are only a few rules:
  1. The character must be approved by your student's ELA teacher BEFORE October 28th - see form attached to the Tuesday packet.
  2. If the character is in both a book and a movie/TV show, the character must have been in the book FIRST.  For example, Hermione Granger from Harry Potter is fine because the book came out BEFORE the movie.  Hannah Montana is NOT okay because the books are based on the TV show.
  3. No masks, swords, props or other accessories with their costume.
  4. All costumes must align with school dress code (length of skirts/shorts, width of sleeves, height of heels, etc.)
  5. If your child is not participating or does not have a pre-approved character he/she must wear our normal school uniform.

Great American Fundraiser & New Fundraiser
Thank you for participating in our school fundraiser, "Great American".  Because of your hard work, we were able to raise money to go towards the end of the year trips for the 2015 - 2016 school year. Once again, thank you for your generosity and support. We look forward to your participation in the next fundraiser!

IT'S THAT TIME AGAIN! The Poppin' Popcorn fundraiser has returned just in time for the holidays! Our next fundraiser is presented by "The Goodies Factory". The Goodies Factory brochure encompasses  a variety of gourmet popcorn flavors, whether you enjoy savory treats like Jalapeņo or White Cheddar, crunchy flavors like Buttery Caramel and Chicago Style, or sweet dessert flavors like Cookies & Cream and Peanut Butter Chocolate, there's something for everyone!

Here is the best thing! The profit (40% of total amount sold) from the items that you sell will go directly towards your child's fees for the end of the year trip!  The top seller in each grade will receive a trophy and the top selling homeroom will win a pizza party. Let's get started!

9 Ways to Boost Your Child's Confidence

1.     ACKNOWLEDGE THEIR FEELINGS

If your child comes to you with a self-esteem issue, it is important to hear why he is feeling down in the dumps. This will help you identify the underlying problem and offer an effective solution.

2.     IDENTIFY INACCURATE BELIEFS

We tend to be our own worst critics, and that's especially true of children. But when they can't meet the impossible (and sometimes irrational) standards they set, it takes a toll on their confidence. By offering an objective and more optimistic view on the situation, you can quickly turn their thoughts around. For example, if your child constantly says he is bad at math and a horrible student, try telling him that he is a good student who simply needs to spend a little more time on one particular subject.

3.     AVOID COMPARISONS

Nothing makes a child feel worse than hearing she isn't as good as a sibling. By eliminating comparisons, you manage to maximize her self-esteem and minimize sibling rivalry.

4.     BUILD A POSITIVE HOME

They say charity begins at home, but so does confidence. By making a few changes, you can create a safe space that boosts your child's self-esteem and (hopefully) teaches her to help others who may be down on themselves.

5.     PRAISE THEM AROUND OTHER ADULTS

When we compliment our kids, it often goes in one ear and out the other. Yet when we tell a relative or family friend about our child's achievements, our kids are more receptive to the praise. By humbly bragging about your child, you prove that you aren't saying these things to boost her self-esteem, but because you actually believe them.

6.     OFFER UNCONDITIONAL LOVE

It's easier for children to overcome hardships if there is a constant support system at home. Remind your little ones that you will be there for the good and bad times and will love them even when they make mistakes.

7.     ASK THEM FOR HELP

When children are given more responsibilities - even something small, like taking out the trash - it shows that the adult is confident in their capabilities. This, in turn, makes them more confident in themselves. So don't hesitate to add a few more tasks to their to-do list (especially if it lightens your own load).

8.     CELEBRATE THEIR SUCCESS

Whether it's learning to ride a bike or acing an important test, commend your child for a job well done. When he sees how proud you are of him, he will start to take pride in himself.

9.     GIVE THEM A GREAT ROLE MODEL

As the saying goes, you need to practice what you preach. If you call yourself stupid or shy away from challenges, then your child is likely to follow suit. Look at this as an opportunity not only to build your child's confidence but to boost your own, as well.
