Family,
Are we doing enough for our children? Are we doing too much for our children? Are we stressing our children out? Is private school the answer to the education gap? Can you get the same quality and results from public schools? Why are black boys with energy seen as "aggressive" or quickly diagnosed with ADHD and their white counterparts seen as being "playful"? Why is it easier for black girls to become acclimated in private school or predominately white settings? Is it really easy or does it just look easy for black girls? What is a parent to do when he/she is trying to raise a strong, confident, successful, educated, productive black child in America? What is a parent to do...?
Well, these questions where the questions that filled the room after 30-40 of our families joined me to watch "American Promise". As an educator and mother, the docudrama was moving, but it was the discussions that followed that were pure MAGIC!
KIPP Vision Primary families are deeply committed to the journey. Not only did we grapple with these topics after the film, but the conversations continued the very next morning on the homeroom GroupMEs and via emails sent directly to me. You all want the very best for your scholars and hopefully American Choice opened your eyes to the possibilities and the challenges that we, as parents of children of color, face in America.
Here's what a few parents had to say...
I'm glad that I found KVP because I look at what those kids needed to know to be successful in that school ("Dalton" - the private school in the docudrama) and I'm grateful that you all are starting to instill that in them now.
The documentary has been on my mind. It was interesting to Google it and read comments from people who actually attended the school. I would like to see another where the kids were from single parent homes, just to see the difference.
I have three younger brothers that were all labeled in kindergarten. My mom put them in our churches private school and they were able to thrive! Matter of fact, one of my brothers is a master's prepared educator who now is the assistant principal of the same school.
I can say when (my son) was being distracted in school, someone was quick to say he may need medicine. I said "No, he doesn't!" I think our boys are quickly misdiagnosed so that they can receive unnecessary medicine that would probably actually slow them down. I am thankful that KIPP was willing to use various resources to determine how to work with (my son) before it was assumed he had a problem. Thank you @Dr. Wheda Carletos
I have to say that last night was awesome. The movie was great. I learned a lot and my eyes were opened to so much. I will say that I don't regret my decision one bit enrolling my kids in KIPP. This year has started out awesome. This year makes my 2nd year for my daughter. I have a sophomore at KIPP Collegiate and she is excelling exceptionally. KIPP is helping me to mold my son into a young man. KIPP may not be for everyone, but I have to say thanks to the staff starting from Dr. Carletos down to the teachers.
With my whole heart,
Dr. Wheda A. Carletos, Ph.D.

Flag Football |
Thank you, parents, for supporting our flag football team this season. The boys gave it their all and the coaches guided them every step of the way. We finished the season strong, with a valiant effort at the playoff game on Saturday. It came down to the last 10 seconds, but we were unable to pull off the win. We would also like to thank our cheerleaders for their spirit and encouragement throughout the games.
