The data is in! Our scholars begin the year by taking pre-assessments. These pre-assessments tell us EXACTLY where your scholar is and EXACTLY what WE need to work on in order to ensure that your scholar is successful. By now, you' ve received a copy of your scholars' NWEA MAP Reading and Mathematics scores and his/her STEP Literacy score. Please note that the end of year STEP Goal for all kindergarten scholars is STEP 4, for all first grade scholars is STEP 7 and for all second grade scholars is STEP 10. In addition, all scholars are expected to make AT LEAST 1 1/2 years of growth in both reading and mathematics on the MAP Assessment by the end of the year. So, how are we doing as a region and as a school:
Headline #1: Nearly all our primary grade-level cohorts are performing, on average, above the 2015 NWEA national norms for the FALL MAP administration.
Headline #2: As anticipated, we witnessed a slight summer slide for nearly all primary school cohorts for percent of students in top Top Quartile and average RIT score. Scholars that performed really well the last time tested showed a dip in their pre-assessment scores.
Headline #3: Regionally, less of our Kindergarten students are coming to us in the Bottom Quartile, instead, a large majority of our incoming primary students are concentrated around the 2nd and 3rd Quartiles.
STEP DATA
Kindergarten
The levels of STEP are Pre-read, 1 - 12. Nationally, kindergarten scholars are expected to come in testing at a Pre-read level. The Pre-assessment showed that coming into KIPP Vision Primary School, 62.7% of KIPP Vision Primary Scholars tested at BELOW a pre-read.
1st Grade
The pre-assessment showed that 73% of our scholars are at or above grade level. A closer look at the data shows that those scholars that began with KIPP Vision Primary School in kindergarten outperformed their new to KVP classmates in many cases.
2nd Grade
We saw the most "summer slide" in our second grade scholars. The STEP pre-assessment data showed that many of our 2nd grade scholars dropped 1-3 reading levels over the summer. The data shows that only 64% of our 2nd grade scholars are at or above grade level.

Family, there's a lot of work to be done. The end of year goals for our scholars are pretty rigorous this year because many of them have a lot of catching up to do. We simply refuse to leave any of our scholar behind, so we have all rolled up our sleeves and are giving this journey everything we have. Thank you for your partnership and your commitment to making sure the homework is done; that you are reviewing the week at a glance to see what your scholar is learning at school and to meeting with your teacher as often as needed to help your scholar navigate this journey. TOGETHER, we can make sure that sky is the limit for our scholars. Who's with me?
The journey continues.
