Family,

On this journey to empower your scholar with the academic tools, character skills and scholarly habits critical for success in top quality high school, competitive colleges and the world beyond, one of the most important factors in your scholar's success is YOU. That's right! On this journey, YOU matter!

By now, you have experienced just how committed we at KIPP Vision Primary School are to making sure that you have all of the information and tools that you need to make informed choices for your scholar and to advocate on their behalf.  In fact, we encourage it!  We believe and research shows that partnerships among schools, family, and community groups are not a luxury, they are a necessity. The more the relationship between families and the school is a real partnership, the more student achievement increases.  It's that simple!  You navigate your scholar's journey by being informed and staying involved; we steer your scholar along the way by using our expert knowledge and training to make the right academic decisions for your scholar and to echo the character lessons being taught at home and THEN your scholar moves successfully on their journey to and through college. Yes, it's that simple!

However, there can be bumps along the road.  Sadly, there's a very fine line between advocating and instigating. Advocating makes for a smooth ride and instigating, unfortunately, slows down the process for everyone.  In fact, as a parent - who loves her children more than absolutely anything on this planet - I too have found myself standing in the middle of speaking from a place of partnership (advocating) and speaking from a place of raw emotion (instigating). It happens, even to me. I've shown up at the daycare and the center didn't open at 6:30 AM as promised. Don't they know that I have to be to work at 7:00 AM?  I've received a less than satisfactory report card from my oldest daughter's school. She's brilliant, surely there's something wrong with the teacher or the curriculum? I've also walked in and heard school staff describing my son as "bad" (he is a little spirited, but not bad) and I wanted to lose my mind.  What do I do?  Blinded by the love that I have for my children and moved by my commitment to make sure that they are protected and cared for, what do I do? Do I say mean things about the staff to any one that will listen? Do I threaten to have the center closed down because I am unhappy? Do I take my frustration and post it on the homeroom web page OR do I take my conflict directly to the source?

Family, what I quickly learned was that one approach (advocating from a place of partnership) leads to fruitful results for both myself and my children, while the other (instigating from a place of anger and frustration) does very little to actually help my scholar.  In fact, it doesn't move my scholar along his/her journey at all. What it does do is unfairly color the perceptions of all parents and creates an unhealthy and adversarial relationship with your scholar's teacher and in some cases the entire school and that's not what you want at all.  Is it? That's not what I wanted for my babies.  So as parents, how do we advocate constructively?
  • Read, Read, Read! You cannot effectively advocate on your scholar's behalf if you are not abreast of what's happening at the school.  Use the Week at a Glance,  Family Handbook, Weekly Bulletins and Homeroom Web Pages to equip yourself with ALL of the knowledge you will need to make informed decisions for your scholar. Knowledge is power!
  • Ask questions! If you do not see what you are looking for or don't understand what's been posted, take your questions directly to the source.  Who's the source?

Your Scholar's Teachers should be the first person that you contact concerning your scholar. He/She is the person working directly with your scholar each and every day. No one knows what's happening with your scholar better than they do.

  • All KVP staff members have school phones and are required to answer until 9:00 pm each night.  Please give us 24 hours to return your call.  Teachers and staff are also available for in-person meetings.  Make sure to schedule  your conference in advance.  As you know, the day is packed with lots of instruction, teacher coaching and preparation.  We ask that you reach out to secure the time to ensure that you have our undivided attention. We want to hear from you and we want the meeting to be meaningful and helpful for you.
  • "Dr. Carletos, what if I want to meet with YOU? "  I am ALWAYS available to meet with anyone that wants to meet with me.  In fact, as we continue to grow, I am working hard on keeping my personal relationships with each and every one of you (300+ and counting) and I truly hope that you continue to stop by and to reach out.  I love hearing from you.   However, be mindful that my first question will always be "Did you speak with the teacher? OR with the expert in place to handle those issues?"  I have the best team in place; I rely on their expertise and I trust them!  They know their jobs and they work each and every day to do it in excellence.
  • Join PTA and Attend Title I meetings.  Do you want to have your voice heard in a way that leads to change for KVP and your scholar, then SHOW UP!  We truly have the most active PTA that I have ever been privileged to be a part of.  Come out, pay your dues, join a committee and let's get to work.
  • Lastly, continue to set high expectations and follow your scholar's progress - monitoring attendance, homework, grades, behavior and uniform infractions - Those things matter!

Family, WE ARE ON THIS JOURNEY TOGETHER!  You've made the commitment to navigate and we are dedicated to steering.  All of our scholars will succeed. They MUST succeed, but we have to do it TOGETHER! Can we count on YOU?

The journey continues.

With my whole heart,

New Text Alert System for Bus Alerts
We sent out a text on September 2 and September 8 about our new text alert system for bus alerts.  If you have not already done so, please take 2 minutes to sign up for the new system.  This system allows us to only send bus alerts to those families who elect to receive them instead of the entire campus.  Please note that we will not use the old system anymore for bus alerts as of the end of the day on September 9, 2015.  About 50% of families have already signed up.

Text the code @kvcb to the number 81010.

Kindergarten Immunizations
During the month of September, a state-mandated survey of immunization records for all students enrolled in kindergarten and 7th grade will be conducted. It is mandatory that 100% of children attending the school must have a valid immunization certificate on file for the school to meet the requirements of the law.

Immunization certificates will be retrieved from the Georgia Registry of Immunization Transactions and Services (GRITS) and/or all available Permanent Record Folders for Kindergarten or 7th Grade students who will be reviewed.  A list of students out of compliance will be compiled.  A parental notification letter will be sent to parents of students who have failed to meet immunization requirements. If your scholar is non-compliant by the due date of September 21, 2015, the state law requires us to withdraw them from school.

All kindergarten and 7th grade students who do not have a valid immunization record on file (cannot be expired) should be withdrawn no later than the close of business September 21, 2015 pursuant to Administrative Regulation JBC-R (Student Admissions) if a valid Georgia Immunization Certificate (Form 3231) OR a notarized "Affidavit of Religious Objection" statement has not been received.  Administrators or school officials who permit a child to attend school after 30 days without proper documentation will be guilty of a misdemeanor and could be fined $100 per student. (Georgia Code 20-2-771)
