Improvements for the Franklin Road Out of Date Apartment Complexes Area in Marietta?

Marietta Daily Journal

Some city council members showed openness Thursday to Marietta Mayor Steve Tumlin's proposal to ask voters to support a $35 million bond to do away with out-of-date apartment complexes on Franklin Road.

The targeted area - a mile and a half stretch of Franklin Road between Delk Road and the South Loop - has approximately 3,000 units.

As soon as November, the council may request the funds from voters to pave the way for new development to replace the old complexes. Tumlin said during a committee meeting Thursday the replacement may be residential or commercial - whatever will help the area more.

Council member Johnny Sinclair said the city should consider replacing only a portion of the complexes, shifting residents to the remaining complexes to put them at full capacity.

"At full vacancy, those complexes can afford to make renovations," he said. "The problem is that there are too many complexes on Franklin Road with vacancies."

The bond to fund the purchase of the aging complexes would require a 2 mill increase for taxpayers, or about $160 on a home assessed at $200,000, Marietta Economic Development Director Beth Sessoms said.

The bond would be a 20-year bond, City Attorney Doug Haynie said.

 McEachern Robotics Team Builds

a Sixth-Place Finish

West Cobb Patch News

The Techno Tribe has set a new standard for robotics at McEachern High School. The robot "bot-bot" exceeded the design achievements for this year, including the quality of the robot scoring, programming and student involvement.

They finished in sixth out of 60 teams on the first day of competing. The team doesn't focus on place numbers because the numbers could never measure the improvements and hard work put into robot no. 3265. The team agrees that this year's robot design achieved all the goals set by FIRST Robotics.

Relay for Life!

Like most of us, I know too many people whose lives have been touched by cancer. That's why I've joined with the American Cancer Society to help save lives by participating in a Relay For Life event.

The American Cancer Society Relay For Life program is about so much more than just walking around a track overnight. At Relay for Life events, we celebrate loved ones who have won their battle against cancer, remember those who are no longer with us, and fight back against this disease that takes so much from so many.

I will be participating and would appreciate your support with an online donation toward my fundraising goal. In addition to funding lifesaving research, every dollar raised helps the American Cancer Society provide services to cancer patients in need, like providing rides to treatment for those who don't have transportation of their own.

Thank you so much for your support. Together, we are saving lives from cancer and creating a world with more birthdays!

FOR IMMEDIATE PRESS RELEASE

Workers Rights Coalition Forces Removal of Corporate Leaders From Capital Access Network

COBB COUNTY SCLC, AFL-CIO, AFSCME, CWA, CCT,

JOBS for JUSTICE, NEW ORDER HUMAN RIGHTS ORGANIZATION, COBB COMMUNITY COALITION, OCCUPY OUR HOMES ATLANTA

Marietta, GA- After weeks of protest by the Cobb Workers Rights Coalition, Capital Access Network [CAN], a Well Fargo Bank partner, has removed Nathan Warshaw from his position as Senior Vice President. Also the Senior Vice President of Human Resources, Christy Mahon was removed from her position and ushered out the door and off the company's premises by security personnel.

Warshaw and Mahon were forced to leave after the Workers Rights Coalition made public Warshaw's assault of two employees, both of whom are African American, because they used the paid time off they had earned to take a day off to vote on election day. The assault took place when the employees returned to work the following day.

According to Dr. Ben Williams, President of the Cobb County Chapter of SCLC, "Before the election, employees were faced with intimidation and threats from their employers who tried to direct them to not vote for the President. Poppa John's Pizza threatened to cut back hours of his employees if the President was re-Elected. Governors in some states made it more difficult to vote by creating long lines to discourage voters, other private entities used the public airwaves and the mail system to mislead and discourage voter turnout.   Some employees who exercised their constitutional right to vote have been demoted or fired from the jobs." The Marietta Daily Journal reprinted an article in the February 21, 2013, edition that was published by the Associated Press that reported that a woman in Dayton Ohio was fired because she took time off to vote for President Obama in the 2012 election.

Pastor David Rice, one of the victims assaulted by Warshaw says, "The action is an acknowledgement by the company that the Nathan Warshaw was guilty of the charges made against him; however, much more needs to be done to heal the racial hatred that I experienced at Capital access Network."

"The actions taken by supervisors to intimidate and terminate dutiful employees are not just. Dr. King challenged all of us to be ever mindful that injustice anywhere is injustice everywhere whether it is done in Dayton, Ohio or Kennesaw, GA", says Dr. Williams
