Volume 10 - April 2014

Greetings and Happy Spring!

April is National Child Abuse Awareness Month. It is a time for us to be voices for our youngest assets. April 6th - 12th is also Week of the Young Child, sponsored by National Association for the Education of Young Children.  Many activities are happening in Adair, Dallas, Madison, and Warren County regarding child abuse awareness. Look for the blue pinwheels that will be in various locations around each county.

Child Care in Iowa Ranks 44th

Child care is an essential part of today's economy. Parents cannot work without child care. While parents work, children need to be in a safe setting that promotes their healthy development. Each week nearly 11 million children underage 5 are in some type of child care setting for an average of 35 hours.  Child Care Aware of America conducted a study of child care center regulations and oversight. According to an FY13 Child Care Aware Report  Iowa ranked poorly at 44th for quality child care, Iowa is in the 10 bottom states. Nebraska ranked 51st and Idaho ranked 52nd.  Those that ranked in the top are as follows: Department of Defense,  New York, Washington,  North Dakota,  Oklahoma,  Texas,  Wisconsin,  Delaware,  Illinois, Minnesota, and Tennessee.  Iowa can do better, families deserve better. Help advocate for changes in law that will increase quality in child care.

Does Social Media Work?

Ever wonder if tweeting, posting on Facebook or other social networks actually work?  You can listen to Julie Dixon's TedTalk about Using Your Social Currency to Support Global Causes  as she talks about the value of influence - particularly influence through social media. There are some compelling stories that make the case that they absolutely do.

Phone Scam

Please be wary of a mobile phone scam that is becoming more prevalent lately. In short, it's called a "One Ring" scam. Your mobile phone will ring once and then either will quit, or if you pick it up, no one is there. Several people in this situation would then call the number back to see who was trying to reach them. The problem is, these numbers are outside the US, and are set up to charge outrageous rates to call them. By dialing them, you could be charged $20 for the call and $9 per minute for connecting to an "adult entertainment service." The most common area codes involved are: 268, 809, 876, 284 and 473Learn more about  One Ring Phone Scam.

Electronic Display of Insensitivity

VitalSmarts' new research study shows that 89% of participants surveyed report damaged relationships as a result of the insensitive or inappropriate use of technology. And yet, most suffer silently.

According to the study of 2,025 people, 9 out of 10 report that at least once a week, their friends or family members stop paying attention to them in favor of something happening on their digital devices. And 1 in 4 say Electronic Displays of Insensitivity (EDIs) have caused a serious rift with a friend or family member.

About 12 percent of U.S. babies are born early - before completing at least 37 weeks' gestation - and that puts them at higher risk of physical and mental development problems, especially during their first year of life.
