Fulfilling Our Mission/Supporting HD ResearchGiving
A big part of Philly Cure HD's mission is to support Huntington's disease research.  We are pleased to continue fulfilling our mission with our recent contribution of $12,500 each to the Davidson Laboratories and the Hereditary Disease Foundation.
Research in the Davidson Laboratory is focused on inherited genetic diseases that cause central nervous system dysfunction, with a focus on (1) recessive, childhood onset neurodegenerative disease, such as the lysosomal storage diseases mucopolysaccharidoses and Battens disease; and (2) dominant genetic diseases, specifically CAG repeat disorders, Huntington's disease and spinal cerebellar ataxia, and (3), understanding how noncoding RNAs participate in neural development and neurodegenerative disease processes.

The Hereditary Disease Foundation

The Hereditary Disease Foundation focuses on curing Huntington's disease (HD), a genetic brain disorder caused by a mistake in a single gene. This mistake is the same in all families worldwide with HD, so treatments and cures are expected to benefit everyone with the disease worldwide.

As a single gene disorder, Huntington's disease is an ideal model for other brain disorders
- a pathfinder. If scientists can understand what goes wrong in HD, it could help them understand aspects of many other neurodegenerative diseases, such as Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, and Lou Gehrig's disease. Treatments and cures developed for one disease could help guide the development of treatments for others.

The Hereditary Disease Foundation facilitates pivotal research by leading scientists towards identifying a cure. We organize collaborative scientific workshops, fund innovative research projects, and bring together international scientists to share their findings at our "Milton Wexler Celebration of Life" biennial symposium. Your support makes our work possible.

HOPE FOR HD
Click Here & Then Again on the Hereditary Disease Foundation Website

Launched in 2010, Build Hope for HD is an online donation campaign developed in partnership with Lundbeck, a global pharmaceutical company dedicated to the treatment of brain disorders. For every click through the end of the year, Lundbeck will donate $15 to the Casa Hogar clinic, up to $25,000.

In 1999, the Hereditary Disease Foundation worked with Venezuelan authorities to open the Casa Hogar Corea de Huntington Amor y Fe (Huntington's Chorea Home of Love and Faith), a clinic located along the shores of Lake Maracaibo in Venezuela. This clinic provides free care to one of the largest extended families - more than 18,000 individuals within 10 generations - affected by HD. The families in this community helped researchers identify and isolate the HD gene, which led to advancements in the understanding of HD and other genetic diseases.
